I chatted with the android accessibility helpdesk and it seems like a major update could be coming to talkback thanks to me. (self.Blind)

So, as some of you may now, talkback can read youtube captions but it is having a hard time doing so. Most notably it tends to tell the time after reading aloud one sentence and this causes you to miss major parts of the subtitles.

Sometimes it doesn't even start the automatic reading, depending on the language you are using.

So i took this issue up with the devs and this is what they had to say:

"Hi u/Lerssikopteri,

Thank you for contacting The Google Disability Support Team. My name is Shiv and we spoke over a chat regarding TalkBack announcing the time, when reading captions on YouTube.

I performed some testing with an Android 9 device using the video you sent in chat which was really helpful when testing your issue. After further testing and consultation we've learned that because both TalkBack and Closed Captions are individual accessibility features, according to the Guidelines, Caption content should be readily accessible and available to those who require it but does not currently work whilst a screen-reader is enabled simultaneously. That being said Jorma, we want to be as helpful as possible and do have it within our power to file a request for this feature if you want?

Please let us know if you would like us to do that and if you have any questions or anything else you need, feel free to include that in your response to this email! In the meantime Lerssikopteri, I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Thanks!
Shiv
The Google Support Team"

And to which i answered:

"Yes absolutely! That would be amazing! If you can make talkback read those subtitles when automatic reading is enabled i, and everyone who is blind, would be immensly thankful.

Words couldn't express my gratitude if you can implement it🙈♥️♥️!"

Oh, thought this might be something about brailleback being integrated with TalkBack. Ah well.

Hi lerssikopteri,

Thank you so much for reaching out back to me. I really appreciate those words.

We are constantly testing and working to further improve accessibility within Google products and we appreciate your feedback. I will be submitting your feature request for the ability to talkback reading close captions when automatic reading is enabled to the appropriate team for further review.

In the meantime, I recommend your friend and you for staying up-to-date on our latest product announcements by following us on our Twitter page (@googleaccess) and the Google Accessibility blog. I'd also encourage you to join the eyes-free community for Android eyes-free products or join the accessible community for discussing general accessibility feedback with other users.

And again, Lerssikopteri reply to my email if you still have any questions regarding accessibility and assistive technology within Google products, we're always ready to help you.

Wonderuful! As a side note, some people might find it inconvenient tho, so if it gets implemented, maybe a button to enable the caption reading manually would be nice?

Hi lerssikopteri,

I really appreciate your suggestion. Sorry to say this is something that our escalation team will further review for enabling the manual caption reading button. No worries though Jorma, I will keep a close eye on any updates for this and let you know once I have more information. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reply to my email if you have further questions or concerns, I will always be happy to help!

So, screen readers reading out captions is an example of competing disabilities. I personally hate it when VoiceOver starts reading captions since the voice feedback starts reading out over the video dialog and then I have to hunt through the interface to find where to shut the captions off, and by then I've missed a good chunk of the video and have to go back.

What situations are you in where you find this actually helpful with the screen reader reading out captions? Is it when the caption is helping make an inaudible bit of dialog available? Or are you using captioning in another language to act like a dubbing feature for what you are watching? Whatever they do, I hope they make it quick and easy to shut it off so it doesn't get in the way if captions suddenly turn on when loading a video. Count me in as a blind person who absolutely would not welcome this change.

Talkback can be turned off by holding both volume buttons for 3 seconds, but you have to enable that from the settings. Don't know about talkback tho.

And i would use that for my german studies+ i have a friend who is not so good with english, so it would make my time easier if it just outright dubbed the video for him. Writing is slow, you know.
