Fully blind cooks of Reddit: how do you label all your seasonings, sauce bottles etc? (self.Blind)
submitted by HDMILex
I'm tired of pulling out my phone to identify bottle after bottle; it's a pain. Braille labels are only useful for permanent things as bottles usually need to be replaced (such as sauces). Tactile identification is only useful if the bottle/can feels unique in some way.

Is there an easier way to do this?

I use velcro straps around the bottles with Braille labels, easy to transfer when I get a new bottle. If the bottle has a unique shape I may forgo that though, like in my shower, I have a dedicated shelf for just my products, all are different sizes or shapes, so it's easy to know what I'm grabbing with out a label or rubber band.

Velcro straps is a great idea! u/marconius should do that. Currently we have Braille-labeled spice jars and he organizes bottles and jars in order so he knows what's what. I don't usually cook so I don't touch his stuff. If I do, I put it back where it was.

For bathroom stuff, he has his shelf of products at home. When we're not home, and the products are shaped and sized the same, I'll mark up one by gouging a deep scratch into it or place them in different places (e.g. shampoo in the corner by the showerhead, conditioner in the corner on the other end of the tub). Once I realized I grabbed two of the same toothbrushes while unpacking stuff at the hotel. Thankfully I had an extra hair tie to wrap around the handle of a toothbrush.

Spices are all in refill bottles with Braille label, sauces I use an elastics band round the bottle with a Braille label. I always smell things before using them though cos mistakes are made when others use my stuff

A reddit user shared this article a couple weeks ago and it has some great tips for tactile identification in the kitchen!

Some people use velcro/other tactile stickers from the dollar store to attach to the bottles, then remember them. Another technique is to get a rack that holds specific bottles, label the rack slots, and just refill the bottles as they empty. That usually works better for the more common spices and such.

This is still time-consuming for me but I can identify herbs and spices just by the smell. This isn't that much faster than using my phone camera to look at the labels but it's definitely helpful

Not if you have a million different spices though. Labeling is much easier.

No doubt labeling is easier. I only have a dozen or so spices I use regularly so that keeps it manageable
