Describing Images for Screen Readers (self.Blind)
submitted by TrainToFlavorTown
I am a sighted person and I have seen comments describing pictures in the comments for screen readers so that people who use screen readers can enjoy more picture oriented subs.

I would like to help out with this as a way to develop my typing speed and posture. Unfortunately I cannot find any of the comments I had seen before and haven't been able to find any information.

I would have put this in the "megathread" for how do blind people use reddit but unfortunately it is archived. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Hey,

The wonderful folks who do that work can be found at /r/transcribersofreddit. That's the place to go to learn how to get started!

You could also get in touch with @describe_images (I think that's the handle) on Twitter, who do the same thing.

While this blog post covers more of the business side of alt text for images on websites, the overall ideas behind the way to write proper descriptive text is clearly defined there. This works for images anywhere, not just on sites.
