Interviewing programmers and software developers about their experiences (self.Blind)
submitted by pandeymauli
Hello,

I am a doctoral student at the University of Michigan School of Information. I work with $1 and $1. We focus on understanding and improving the accessibility of programming tools for developers with visual impairments. As part of a project, we are conducting interviews with professional developers and those who are learning programming. We want to understand their motivations behind choosing this career, challengers they encounter, and collaborations with other programmers.

If you or any one you know would be interested in sharing their experience with us, please get in touch with Mauli Pandey : $1. You can also DM me if interested.

Interviews will be conducted in person or over Skype / phone, depending on participant’s availability and convenience. The interviews are expected to last approximately 45-60 minutes. Participants would be compensated with $15 Amazon gift card for their time.

Thanks and Best,

Mauli Pandey

i don't have any sort of vision issues but i am dyslexic so maybe i can give you some insight into why a person with a disability would choose to go into programming.

when i was in high school back in the 90s, i would fail almost all of my classes except the computer science related ones. it was because i had to learn on someone else's terms. if i wanted to learn english or math i would have to sit down with someone and have them slowly take me through it. i would have to try and thing like they think and do the work on their time. it was crippling and often i would feel like an inconvenience since i moved slower than most kids. with computers none of that mattered. it was just me and the machine. i could take all the time i wanted and make tons of mistakes without any judgement. if what i did was wrong the computer wouldn't waffle around or try to spare my feelings, it would just error out. with computers i was allowed to learn on my own terms.

its not exactly the same experience as a blind person i am sure but i suspect its similar.
