Accessible Web Comics (self.Blind)
submitted by jessica-js-jordan
Hi folks!

I'm a sighted web developer who is interested in creating accessible web comics but who is just starting out to learn about how screen reader users browse the web and which kind of user interface patterns make sense and are intuitive. I'm currently preparing a web comic over at $1 and if you're interested in comics please feel free to give it a read and let me know what you think. Also feedback along the lines of "I cannot even access the comic, because the keyboard navigation is whacky" is greatly appreciated.

I'm also interested to hear more about your favorite comics on the web so far if you're a comic fan yourself!

So this one man I knew had this long running comic called Help Desk. How he would make it accessible is he would have a heading for transcript under the comic, and have all the relevant text there.

Thank you for the suggestion! I just had a quick read with ChromeVox on the page to understand what you're saying about the accessibility of the comic by providing an explicitly defined transcript. This is indeed really useful!

the over all concept is sound and appears to be working as intended. some of the links appear to be broken. your alt_text needs a little work. the sound effects of the water doing really translate through the screen reader as you might intend.

i would suggest that you download NVDA and learn how to use it. its a little tricky at first but will give you perfect understanding how how a person using a screen reader might experience your work.

overall, good job!

Thank you for all the suggestions! I'll take another look at the image descriptions and the links as well. And good point, I have tried out ChromeVox only, but I'll give NVDA also a try for navigating the page myself
