Going to the bar by yourself? (self.Blind)
submitted by Vicorin
There’s a few bands playing at a bar in town that I’ve never been to and I would really like to go. Problem is, it’s metal, so I don’t know a lot of people who would enjoy it. Besides, I’m a college student, and most of my friends just graduated.

So it’s a bar I’ve never been to before, where there’ll be a band playingand it’ll be loud and possibly crowded. I’m completely blind, so will probably have to ask someone to direct me to the bar or bathrooms.

Right now, my plan is to show up a little while before the music starts to hopefully arrive at a time where it’s a little calmer so that I can more easily get someone to direct me to the bar, where I can grab a place, and camp out there for the duration of the show.

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing or have tips for navigating a loud, crowded, unfamiliar place like this all by myself? I want to get out of my comfort zone and be more independent, but I want to make sure I’m being safe and smart about it.

I'm a legally blind chick and I go to metal shows alone most months. If I don't know the place yet I will call and ask about the layout (steps and restrooms) and where the band will be and explain that I'm blind. Other times I'll go a few days ahead when it's dead and talk to a bartender or host. Sometimes they will recommend where to stand/sit or even hold a space for you. Have a great time! Soaking up the energy at live shows is my favorite thing!

I have found bartenders and wait staff usually very helpful and attentive. Just if you need anything make sure to get their attention and also try to make friends with people near you.

I am sure you will have a great time, and that your idea of arriving early is a great one. I have this karaoke place I go to on my own occasionally, concerts at bars are probably noisier than there but not by much.

Make sure you find the menu online if one is available that's always my go to first step in going out to a bar or to eat.

Hell yeah. I am totally blind and go alone sometimes as well. The suggestions here are good. Just figure out where the bar is and have a great time.
Good on you for going for it. When I was younger I didn't like to do stuff alone very often but I find as I get older that I enjoy it more and more. Probably I just worry less about people looking at me weird and just have a good time. If you are comfortable in your own skin, people will respond to that.
If you're in the state of Virginia and you want another blind guy to go to a metal show with, hit me up.

I went for it, it was super easy and I had a great time. Got to hang out with one of the bands after the show and made some new friends. It was good to get out of my comfort zone a little.

Cool Dude! Yeah bars, especially where there are gigs happening are quite open minded and people are just cool. Yeah, sometimes you can run into an annoying drunk, but most often things can go alright.
