Promoting and supporting poetry and long-form writing from /r/blind (self.Blind)
submitted by winningwriters
Hey there creatives of /r/blind,

I was here earlier in the year to look for writers and poets, and now I’m back again because we have another diversity-focused writing contest going on. $1 for self-published books offers a grand prize of $3,000, six second prizes of $1,000 each, and six honorable mentions of $250 each, as well as marketing consultation and other prizes for grand- and second-prize winners. Categories include mainstream/literary fiction, genre fiction, creative nonfiction and memoir, poetry, children’s picture books, and graphic narrative. Excerpts and critiques of all winning entries will be published at winningwriters.com. The contest is international and the deadline is June 30. A reading fee of $60 funds our judging process.

Part of $1 mission is to find and promote voices and themes underrepresented in publishing, including (but of course not limited to) racial, cultural, national, religious, gender/sexual identity, body positive, neurodiverse, and [dis]abled. We are interested primarily in the representation of the voices/themes in the poetry, rather than the identity of the writer. I started doing outreach on Reddit last year, and since then we've received hundreds more entries featuring diverse characters and voices. We're working hard to increase the diversity of our entry pool and give good writers the exposure they deserve. I know this isn't technically a "writers' subreddit," but in the past some of our strongest entries have come from subs like this one, which ostensibly have nothing to do with writing. So, if you are a writer, please consider entering our contests. And if you know any writers, please consider passing this information on to them. Thanks for reading, and all the best.

PS – Besides running contests, we’ve always been dedicated to helping writers with $1 on the craft and marketing of writing, as well as an ever-growing email directory of $1. You don’t have to enter one of our contests to be welcome on our site :)

This sounds like a scam.

Hey, I respect your wariness. We are endorsed by $1 Magazine as a reputable contest.

Then why do you charge $60 entry fee? If you are actually reputable, why do you not have donors? Why are you asking disabled people to fund your "contest"? This looks more like sketchy gambling than anything else.

You're definitely in good company when it comes to people objecting to the fee. That's a reasonable reaction. A lot of writers prefer to pursue other opportunities. That's why we try to guide people with work to share towards free writing contests, as well (link near the bottom of my original post.) At the end of the day our priority is to help writers find opportunities to get their work seen and critiqued, whether or not they enter the contests we run personally :3
