Question For Blind IT Pros (self.Blind)
submitted by Talan1177
I have RP and I still have a decent amount of sight although I am legally blind. I already have a bachelors degree in computer engineering. I am looking to go back to school and continuing my IT education. I am wondering what you all work in? I am thinking maybe cyber security. I just want to pick something that I can still do even if I go totally blind at some point. Technology has been a passion of mine since childhood. I was programming VCRs without the manual when they were very difficult to program. I look forward to seeing what you fine folks have to say.

Programming, networking, sysadmin stuff if your employer will work with you on putting the screenreader on or magnifying the server gear (possibly not as much of a conditional if Narrator keeps doing what it's doing), and yeah, cybersecurity are all viable options. I'm totally blind and am a network operations analyst for now until something with better pay comes along. Entirely doable.

I test websites, web applications, documents, and traditional client server apps for accessibility and section 508 compliance. It’s a highly sought after IT specialty, that commands a pretty decent salary, even if you’re working for a government agency.
Think 75, to 150 K, depending on your experience, and the job you are doing in the field.I’m totally blind and easily do my job, so I think you’d be a shoe in. :-)
