Accessible Workout Displays (self.Blind)
submitted by jrs12
Okay friends, I have a question for all the athletes out there that are totally blind. How do you get live time information during your workouts?
I recently started a new job in which I'm providing instruction to adults with visual impairments. One of the classes is a recreation and leisure class. My athletically minded brain is really bothered by the fact that all my solutions for checking heartrate, distance, time elapsed, and steps require a person to take out their phone and scroll through an app.
Are there any options for dictating a question to your phone that Siri or Google Assistant could answer? Do you set your watch to beep for certain distances or heartrate ranges? I'm dying to know what solutions you've come up with so that I can pass this information on to others who may find it helpful.
P.S. How was an app not been invented that can read the digital displays on treadmills!?!? It seems like it would be so simple!
Thanks for any advice you could give!

Hi, you’ll probably don’t have the budget to purchase Apple watches for the athletes that you’ll be working with. So I’m thinking that they could do their workouts based on time and how they feel, rather than using the numbers on the screen. Or if they really need to know information on the screens, they could use applications such as Aira (not free) or BeMyEyes (free,) to ask a sighted person to look through the camera of a phone so that they can read the display.
