Dating Sighted People (self.Blind)
submitted by BlueRock956
Why do we tend to date other blind people? Why not date sighted people too?
HDMILex 3 points 4y ago
Our community's fucked up.

No but seriously though. We tend to gravitate toward people who have a similar experience/understanding to us.

I need more sighted people in my life (actually more people in general).

I personally would not really want to pursue a relationship with another blind person, so I'm not sure.
Marconius 2 points 4y ago
My sighted partner and I have been together for 5 years now...

Congratulations!

This is a near and dear issue to me, as I'm at the age now where I'm more or less done with all of my irresponsible and casual stuff. When I date someone, it's to evaluate them for missus/mommy status. What few blind friends I have tend to chuckle and groan when I say this, but I only date sighted people. Logistically it's just a better move. Blind couples need to pay for an Uber every time they want to go anywhere, they can't see if their babies are looking a little pale or if spiders are building a small empire up near their ceiling.

I’d love to date a sighted person.
HDMILex 2 points 4y ago
It definitely gives you a hell of a lot more freedom.
bradley22 1 points 4y ago
I think that would depend on the persons confidence and the country they live in.

Having said that, they can see so will probably be able to do things faster.

And a bigger chance they are allowed to drive.

True.

Every community is insular. The same complaints are made about "Why do we only date people from work" or church or school. Meeting new people outside of our personal sphere takes time and effort. Blindness may, for some people, make the effort of meeting new people more difficult, but the problem is certainly not unique.

Id actually be excited to meet someone that understands living with vision problems. There would he far less judgement. Far less explanation.

I'm going to guess a lot of it is the opposite, too. Do sighted people want to date us? I'm sure some do, but many would find it awkward or unattractive.
Shaggy1007 2 points 4y ago
I've found they dont. I was told by a girl once "I dont want defective eyed children"

I had another one tell me she couldnt deal with me having vision issues since she had a brother with autism. Then asked me if my condition was contageous (nystagmus)

Ive had 2 that I know of go out and cheat on me when I couldn't drive because hey! How am I going to find out?

After 18 years of a pathedic dating history Ive called it quits at age 33. Its just a hell of alot easier.

No, they wouldn't unless your weird about it. If you make a huge deal about being blind and try to hide it its going to come off a lot more awkward than simply agknoleging it casually. Make jokes about it too so they don't feel awkward about it too. And well, like anyone, blind or not, have a life. Have hobbys you enjoy doing so your actually an interesting person. Nobody's gonna like a boring person, regardless of sight. blindness on its own is really not a huge deal. There are many blind people who get on fine leading completely normal lives with fully sighted partners. I don't think its always the sighted people that find it awkward but the blind people, too.
HDMILex 2 points 4y ago
When I was actively looking for potential partners it was a fucking shitshow. People would be really interested in my achievements..until I told them I'm blind. Most of the time I was cowardly ghosted. Some outright told me they weren't interested in dating someone who's blind.
KillerLag 1 points 4y ago
For some people, they prefer to date people with similar interests and life experiences.

And sometimes, it's just about your circle of friends and who you know.
