I was diagnosed with RP at 13. I'm 34 now, and still have some vision left but I've come to realize this physical safety aspect is a major source of anxiety. For a long time, I was trying to put off thinking about my vision loss unless I had to, as stupid as that might sound.
Anyway, do any of you nice people have advice or anything?

You may want to take some self defense courses, one that are aimed at people with vision loss if possible.
It is also a bit easier if you work on the preventative side rather then the reactive side as well. Avoiding areas known for violence and such goes quite far (not always possible, unfortunately).

You may lose the rest of your vision tomorrow, in 10 years, or never... I recommend you learn how to use a cane, especially if your sight is impaired already. Tripping, bumping, and falling are not good things, so if you are doing any of these you would benefit from having a cane on your hand. It’s a difficult choice, but going to a rehabilitation center can also help you learn skills that will help you stay safe, as you’ll have skills in blindness to travel independently and live independently. Two friends have RP and although they can see quite well, they use a cane. * One opened her forehead when she walked into a column that she didn’t see. * My other friend took a step off a curb, that turned out to be a 7 foot drop in a garage at a business he went to drop off products.

I do have a cane and some skills with it. I need to get myself set up with an O&M instructor or something to help fill in some gaps there.
A 7 foot drop? Holy hell.
Thank you!

Hi, there is something called One Touch. It’s a system of defense designed for people who are blind. I don’t know much about it, but I’ll be going to a seminar next week that will give me an intro to it.
