Functioning as a Blind Vegan (self.Blind)
submitted by whatthefeelings
I joined this sub when my mother was diagnosed with RP a few months ago. I have not been tested for RP, I have no idea if I have it. Other than prescription glasses, consider me fully sighted. I wonder how I will function in ways pertaining to my food choices and the vegan community if I do go blind. Like what tools do you use to read ingredients or menus? Is it hard to trust that people aren't feeding you real meat versus seitan? If anyone in this sub is vegan and uses a seeing eye dog, how do you deal with the (ablist) notion that service animals are "cruel?" Do other vegans try to "call you out?" How do you respond?

I'm blind and have celiac disease, so not vegan but definitely deal with the stress of trying to make sure my food is safe--otherwise I pay for it quite severely!

For ingredients, I mostly shop online using a screen reader or have someone read me ingredient lists (usually I just have them skip to the allergen list). For menus, I usually scan them on my phone, but I always have to ask the server anyway because of gluten-free stuff...so it isn't really a big deal. My great fear is that I'll have a piece of bread on my plate and I won't notice until it's too late, but that hasn't happened yet!

I've never had difficulties trusting people giving me food I can't eat. Honestly, as long as you're friendly, no one's really trying to hurt you that way. Re: vegans calling me out, again, not in the vegan community, but I have had a group of people scream and yell at me about my guide dog for vegan-related reasons when I was in college. It was...uncomfortable, and did not end well for anyone.

I have RP, and I just take a photo on the camera of my iPhone and zoom in.

I think you'll notice the taste difference with seitan and real meat. It's great! But it tastes different and we all know it. May be more of an issue with beyond and impossible, especially in the future, altho i've not yet had the pleasure to try those. Been vegetarian for 2 years. Altho i just read labels or rely on the V in a yellow circle (vegan is a white bold V in a green square) which is the symbol for where i live. With my glasses on i actually atm have above average vision. Without em a cross eyed blurr that can only read very very large font. I'm here because due to my prescription I have a very hightend risk of early onset glaucoma. So I'm preparing for literally 10 years in the future.

Shopping online would probably be great. Cause it has the ingredient list there.

Also vegan facebook groups may help with specific products. Especially local groups. Then you just have to find the same product in the store....
