Hi, I'm wondering what is the best way to notify people that I have no/low vision? (self.Blind)
submitted by Enor7
I love to sit on my front porch in the summer, but when I do, people walking by are waving and stuff (others have told me) but I can't see to respond to them. Is there a good way for me to let the people walking past my house know that I cannot see them, though I don't want to ignore them! I want to be friendly, I just feel like I must seem like I'm ignoring them.

Carry a white cane. It’s instantly ID’s you as visually impaired. The only problem is many people stop engaging with you.

Best thing I can think of is yard signs like political ones, but for whatever group in your area might do something for the blind...

Down side is that criminals would also see that the homeowner is blind...

Possibly better just to control which way your head points? I mean, if you aren't looking in the general direction of a pedestrians head - you failing to notice them can be brushed off as you weren't looking that way.

I'm not blind but i do have horrible vision without my glasses. If i face people and point my eyes at their faces - they get the false impression that I can see them well enough to tell who they are. Better to fail to point my face at them.

You might also consider getting a bench and shade canopy to put closer to the sidewalk. If you're wanting to be social, you could sit closer to the sidewalk and just call out hello when you hear people.

Lawn signs are definitely not recommended as it does broadcast that one is part of a vulnerable population. Possible to lean an obstacle detecting or identification cane next to the wall or use a pair of wrap-around sunglasses a la Stevie Wonder (not my preference but hey)

Alternatives is to simply get out there where the community gathers. Find a meetup group, get active with a local cause, join a book club or form a team for trivia night at the local pub.

Be open and expressive and inviting to conversation. Be interesting and interested in others and you'll do just fine.

Well if you here somebody walking by it never hurts to say hi or hello or however you wish to frays it. Or could have your cane outside with you too if you want.

My distance vision is terrible and I have that same problem and have even confronted my own family and friends that are coming in my gate because I couldn't recognize their faces from that distance.

I just explain the reason and tell them to say something so I know who they are instead of just walking in or waving.

Hang a sign that says "I'm blind. Say Hi loudly and your name"
