Do you use image heavy social media, and if so, how? (self.Blind)
submitted by pngmafia97
YouTube personality Molly Burke (who happens to be blind, but not by birth) mentioned loving browsing Instagram in a video of hers. I know from poor internet connectivity that Instagram will predict what’s in a photo through machine learning, i.e. “portrait, night background.” It made me curious how blind people consume image heavy social media.

Do y’all browse Instagram or Snapchat? If so, how? Is it as simple as hearing the predicted descriptions read aloud? Is that gratifying?

I do not use Instagram and only occasionally use Snapchat. The app has gotten better, and I mainly use it for text anyways. Screen reader works with Snapchat messages but dynamic text (on iPhone) does not.

I do feel like I am missing about 60-80% of social media because of visual impairment.

It's so so very very vague though. If I **really** want to know, I'll save the image and use Bespecular on it. But, meme culture doesn't really appeal to me anyway.

Instagram has alt text functionality now, but it doesn't work for everyone and not a lot of people understand how to use it - so it's a little bit slow-going, but if it catches on, it could really open up Instagram for people with visual impairment. (Some people/pages are also really good about including image descriptions in their captions, which is helpful...)

I use instagram and snapchat. Also, because why the hell not, even though its not a social media, tinder as well. All work if your willing to use them.

On tinder do you base your left or right swiping solely on their bio since you can’t see what they look like?
RJHand 1 points 4y ago
Yes. If no bio then just go with your gut. Let the fates decide.

I use snapchat a fair bit. Couldn't be arsed with anything else. Never really felt inclined in the first place. As long as I can chat with me mates I don't care what I use.

I use both Instagram and Snapchat. Snapchat doesn't have image description. I mainly watch peoples videos. Social media is important to the blind we need to know what are friends are doing so we can be able to talk about what's going on with them and the world. Sadly I don't know many blind people that use Snapchat. All the sighted people are using it.
