the worst part about my blind eye (self.Blind)
submitted by kawaii_psycho451
I can barely read stuff from far away, and when I hide my good eye, I can barely see the corner of the wall. One time I was so mad at myself because I could barely read the soup menu at a restaurant (I forgot the name) and that was the only menu they had, it was above the counter where you order your food

Yep that's really annoying. I hate going into fast food restaurants where the have the menu behind the counter on the wall. I usually just take a picture with my phone and zoom in. Works well for me

I was overjoyed the first time I saw one of those huge touchscreens for ordering your food. The type is large and I can get add close to it as I want.

The biggest problem with the menu behind the counter is that if you have to ask any questions, you might end up holding up the line. Sure, I have a right to know what my options are, but I'd like to inconvenience other customers as little as possible.

Yeah I get ya. I really like the big touchscreens aswell. Very practical

Me too! I am vegetarian so knowing what a place serves is important to me. Anymore I just avoid fast food, or have my options memorized. The other day my friends dragged me to Taco Bell and I used a fast food touchscreen for the first time. I was so rad, I found out about vegetarian menu items I never knew existed.

Oh yeah, those things have opened up entire sections of menus for me. I even found slightly healthier options in some places.

There are apps for realtime zoom. I use one called Super Vision. SOOOOO useful for fine print on medicine, clothes etc

Even though I'm no longer legally blind, this would be incredibly useful. Is it available for the iphone?
ImamBaksh 2 points 4y ago
Can't say, but there were quite a few different ones on android, so I expect iphone has a few too.

Cool. I'll check it out. Thanks

What about getting the seat at a table that puts everybody else outside your filled of view? Like the leftmost seat of your left eye is the good one. That's just the worst little annoyance.

Yep, this is super annoying. Most of places these days have menus online, though, even if they don't have a more accessible one in the store.

Sometimes I get out my phone and use the camera zoom.

yup. i've got a prosthetic eye and low tunnel-ish vision in the other. if i know where i'm going to eat, i look up the menu online. otherwise i just ask for things they might have that i know i like. i once had Einstein's Bagels refuse to tell me if they had a turkey sandwich because "you should learn how to read." when i complained to management they offered me a $5 gift certificate and no apology. and that's why you'll never see me in an Einstein's again.

Ha! Being able to "barely" read it would be a dream for me. I couldn't read it if it was written on a menu on the table, one foot from my eyes.

But there's something I do in these cases: ask the girl/guy at the counter. Yes the people behind me will get impatient and no, I don't give a damn. I've gone through too many situations where I forced myself to be hungry/thirsty because I was scared how others might react. Now I just stand up for myself and make sure I get something that I actually want.

I used to feel self conscious about pulling it out and reading the menu with it in public, especially with people waiting in line behind me, but after 3 years of it, I just don't care anymore and no one has ever said anything to me about it.

I'll just talk to the cashier. I've got ways to read the menu with phone and other things, but no sense in getting complicated.

Just get friendly.
