How do guide dog schools compare? (self.Blind)
submitted by smkelly
There are $1 of guide dog schools. There is Guide Dogs for the Blind, The Seeing Eye, plus several others.

I was just curious what, if any, difference there are between these schools, their programs, and the training that the dogs get. Are some "better" than others, or have a better reputation? Or, if you have a guide dog, how did you choose a school?

I've always been interested in guide dogs, but I've never really heard any definitive answer to this.

I am getting a dog from Guiding Eyes this fall. It will be my first guide dog.

The key difference for me was that Guiding Eyes is training running guides. Being able to run outside again safely is the primary reason I wanted to get a guide dog. No other school is doing this.

Without the possibility of a running guide I probably would not be switching from cane to guide dog. I have been getting around fine with a cane, but I miss running.

Have you checked if your state/city has Achilleas?

I am also not too familiar with other schools, but I got my dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind. My dog of 4 years has been amazing and incredibly well behaved.
GDB also has excellent graduate support services. They will send someone out to you if you need any assistance with guidework which can be very helpful. Their Veterinary financial assistance program is also fantastic as I was a student up until now and really would’ve struggled with vet bills. My dog got sick a few years back, requiring a 2 night hospital stay, and GDB was able to cover all of it. I am forever grateful.
I’ve heard good things about Guiding Eyes as well.
Primarily, when choosing a school, I wanted to be sure that the dogs were trained using positive reinforcement, as opposed to a negative reinforcement and punishment approach. That was really important to me. I also compaired the level of graduate support.

I don't know about the differences in training. I can tell you that I've heard the best things about Guiding Eyes and The Seeing Eye. Those seem to be the ones with the best reputations. I've been around dogs from a lot of schools--Fidelco, Freedom, Guiding Eyes, Seeing Eye, Leader, and others--and my preference is Guiding Eyes. Their dogs always seem the best behaved, the most calm and professional, and the most focused. My own dog is from Guiding Eyes, and I'm very happy with him. He's done nothing to make me change my assessment of Guiding Eyes compared to other schools.
