Question about cane tips (self.Blind)
submitted by ParaNoxx
Hey r/blind, I'm visually impaired and regularly use a cane (after so many years of avoiding it like a weirdo, honestly life has been so much better with it, but I digress.) I'm about to purchase a replacement for one that got lost, and I've got a question or two about cane tips. I don't like rollers and prefer to use the two-point touch technique, by the way.

I often have the problem where I'm out somewhere and I have to do something with both hands, so I balance the cane against my body. Depending on the situation, I can't always hold it against me with my arm, and then it doesn't stay put and can slide away from me, which is really annoying and can hurt other people, or make me drop whatever I was doing, etc. It sucks. This was with a pencil tip. Is there a different cane tip I can get that is a little more steady that would make this easier? Or is this just an unfortunate thing I'm gonna have to deal with? lol.

I've been looking at the metal disc tip since it's completely flat on the bottom, but I don't know if the metal is too slippery and won't "grasp" the ground well, or it might still get stuck in sidewalk cracks a lot like the pencil. Only way to really find out is to try it, maybe.

I also might get a non-rolling marshmallow tip since that won't get stuck in cracks and will probably sit nice and steady.

Any input would be appreciated, or any advice about what to do with your cane when you need both hands for something and don't have time to put it away. Sometimes only having one hand free to even carry things can be an issue, but I know that's unavoidable and I'll get used to it and figure out how to deal as I get more experience.

Thanks.

I really enjoy the metal NFB tips on my Revolution canes. I have that tip adapter and the metal tips just slip right on and off you go. My ONM instructor showed me how you can put a simple knot in the elastic loop coming out of the handle to allow for an extra stop where you can hook your thumb when you need two hands to do something, otherwise, I manage to keep my cane balanced against my shoulder or nestled in the crook of my arm to keep it in place while doing something. Just takes time and practice to learn how to manipulate canes without your hands.

Love the ceramic tips. The one that I have has lasted me six years.
Doesn’t catch on cracks and I love the audible feed back because I also use echo location while traveling

I think you should stay with rollers.

Hello friend,
I use the ceramic cane tip
As others have said it is quite adorable offers a lot of auditory feedback and does not seem to get stuck in cracks nearly as much as the pencil tip does

I will definitely keep the ceramic tip in mind. I don't really use Ambutech, but this might convince me.

it's too bad you don't have of blindness organization close so you would be able to feel all the tips

The metal disc tip doesn't grasp the floor that well. The weight of the cane itself would be enough to tip it over still. The ceramic tip is nice, but it still wouldn't help with standing it up.

If you have time to fold it up, I know someone who put a carabiner in the cord, and clips it to a belt loop when they need their hands.

I'm not looking to stand it up perfectly, just for a tip with a sturdier/flatter bottom so that more surface and weight is in contact with the ground as it's leaning against me.

I would usually love to fold it up, but sometimes I'm in tight quarters (buses and food lines) and don't have the elbow room. I'm figuring stuff out, though!

I would probably just stick with the pencil tip honestly. In my experience, other tips weigh your cane down and compromise the information you’d usually get from the cane’s sound and vibration. Of course, cane tips are fairly inexpensive, so you could always try those other kinds and switch back to the pencil tip if you don’t like them.

When I have to hold my cane upright, without using my hands, I usually lean it up against my body and use my foot to keep it from falling over.. Definitely an imperfect system, but it usually gets the job done.

I really do like how light the pencil tip is but the fact that it loves to get stuck in sidewalk cracks is a right pain in the ass.

I've started using my foot too, to kinda keep it from sliding in whatever direction. It is imperfect, you're right, but it helps.

Any chance you could wear a strong magnet and attach a magnet to the cane? That way you could secure the cane no matter what tip it had. Maybe a magnet on a lanyard? Something that would keep the cane close but not impede whatever you needed to do with your hands.
ParaNoxx [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Maybe? i'd be too scared of having my phone come anywhere near the magnet, though. Lol
AutomaticChair9 1 points 4y ago
A magnet is not likely to damage your phone. Most phones use solid state or flash drives - they are not magnetic.

Ambutech carries a ceramic tip, it's semi rounded, so it doesn't catch as many cracks. It also offers a nice audible tap, and being ceramic it is pretty durable.

I've considered the ceramic tip too, but sadly in the cane I want (revolution) it's not available. But if I get an Ambutech Slimline as a backup I'll def pick up the ceramic!

I like this tip a lot. I bought one of each of their tips to try them out, and I use this one pretty much exclusively.

I've known someone to have used one of those ceramic tips since they first came out, and she's still using the same one, years later.

What kind of things do you do?

I’d recommend getting a foldable cane if they exist where you are.
ParaNoxx [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Paying for public transport, getting and carrying food, using atms, etc. And I always use foldable canes, I guess I'm just too impatient to take the time to always fold it up, or I'm too worried its gonna make the cane poke people.

Shrug

With ATMs, i hold my cane using my left arm, making the cane stand up straight and stand close to the machine.

Can you carry the food in the same hand as your cane? I mean, put your hand through the handles and make the bag hang off of your arm and hold the cane in the same hand?
