My mum is completely blind. She loves her Amazon Echo and IPhone. She’s not at all tech savvy whatsoever.
She wants to watch YouTube videos.
What’s the best way of doing it? I know if you ask Siri to search for YouTube videos it will list a selection of videos related to your search words but it just has pictures (no text). I’m guessing if you have Voiceover enabled it will be pointless, but would love to hear feedback! I was thinking of just linking the phone via Bluetooth to the Echo speaker for better quality.
Does anyone have a better idea? We wouldn’t mind buying a cheap tablet if you have one to recommend.
We live in the UK, thanks x

I’d recommend installing the youtube app, then, with voiceover on, use siri to search for something.
You will then be able to use voiceover to choose what you like, after double tapping on the video, it should come up in the app and start playing, if there’s an add, you can double tap on the skip add button after swiping to it.
I live in the UK too so if you have any questions or would like to call to talk about voiceover, pm me.

How is she using the iPhone right now? I would say VoiceOver is still the best out of all the tablet screenreaders. Is she using that, or just doing everything using Siri?

She uses Siri to do everything but the phone has voiceover enabled

Well the device she has get the app from their. But also I don't want you to feel bad on this, but she shouldn’t be dependant on Siri. Try to get her to use voiceover and than she can watch videos. Siri sadly can't function with everything.

If you use a chrome cast hooked up to a google home you can say “hey google play _____ on tv” it has a lot of voice options.

There is another way, download youtube, turn voiceover on, double tap on the app and do the following: 1. Flick to the right and double tap on search.
2. Tap twice with two fingers on the screen and you’ll hear a sound.
3. Speak what you want to search for and tap with two fingers twice.
4. Tap near the bottom right and you should hear search, now double tap on that and swipe right until she finds the video she wants and double tap on it.

VoiceOver is very easy to use once you master the basics. You should check out the VoiceOver tutorials by the Hadlen Institute for the Blind. The instructor goes nice and slow and is easy to understand. You could watch the videos with her and practice the skills together. I hope that this helps.
