I’d assume so. During a summer job, I had the chance to work alongside an excellent rehab and O&M specialist who is almost completely blind. I learned my own cane skills from a visually impaired O&M instructor.
Being blind probably has drawbacks when it comes to teaching O&M, but I imagine it also gives you a unique perspective that other instructors lack, (not to mention a head start on all those O&M skills).

I had a blind O&M instructor for a short while. You get a different way of learning a new environment, which definitely has its advantages.

Yes I know a few of them.

Yes, I know three fully blind O&M specialists in my area without more than a minutes thought.

I think there used to be one on here - or maybe it was another forum. But yes, there are definitely some out there.

I don't even want to think. Don't let it stop you.

I would think so, but you may have a difficult time selling yourself to parents.

there's O+M instructors for adults as well.
bscross321 points4y ago
That's kind of what I was hinting at, maybe start there.

This is true, but some parents might also like a blind O&M specialist because the child is being trained from someone who uses the skills there teaching every day.

right. We have to sell ourselves no matter which profession we pursue, just a thought.

In my opinion, yes, but you have to make damn sure you have good skills yourself. I think O&M instructors who are blind need to be even better at their job than instructors who aren't visually impaired. There is a cool video floating around somewhere where Daniel Kish, a totally blind instructor is trying to demonstrate to a student why O&M is import. The kid is in a park trying to get home. He even tries to lose Daniel at one point. The kid gets totally disoriented and when he's totally frustrated Daniel says, "okay ready to go home?" And leads him right out of the park. Daniel stayed oriented himself the entire time. That's some next level O&M instruction.

I would pay good money to train with Daniel Kish. Man's an absolute genius.

I've heard of at least one, but have not met them myself.
