Looking for software for blind person (self.Blind)
submitted by Ottawaguitar
My mom has glaucoma and it's getting harder for her to use the computer and cellphone. I'm leaving the country in a few weeks for good and she's gonna be kind of alone. I was wondering if there is any software for the computer that makes computer navigation easier? I'm usually the one that fixes her computer and explains to her how things work. But since i wont be here I want to make the computer as easy to use as possible.

Thanks!

I would think it might be better to help her find services. Does she work with Voc Rehab, a low vision specialist, and/or a state agency on blindness? If you are far away, she needs to get her support system built up around her.

I second this.

You can try the options suggested by other commenters or by AFB ( $1 ). If you want to get something new these are awesome: $1. If your mom just needs occasional help and would prefer to talk to a human being, you could try Aira ( $1 ) or BeMyEyes ( $1 ). I suggest doing some research to figure out which option is best for you - find reviews whenever possible. These are some of the options I suggest to the students I work with (higher ed institution, US). Good luck!

Jaws is pricey MvDa is free and has add ons that allow you to customize it.
Also one of them allows you to access the computer from another computer in emergencies.
If in u.s you can get her in touch with bbvs

The built-in magnifier on Windows and Mac OS are both good. ZoomText is by far the best magnifier, however, it's a bit pricey. For screenreaders, JAWS is the most common.

Voice over on iPhone and TalkBack on Android are both good.

Will definitely check this out

What exactly does she need? Magnification? Text to speech? What about what operating system she's using both on her phone and computer?

Shes using Windows 10 on her PC and Android on the phone. I think she needs something that is simply easier to use. Sometimes she gets confused with all the options and buttons on the screen. I would like her to have an easier version of an operating system that does all the basics and doesn't get caught up in too many details and customizations. And magnification would be great. She doesn't seem to understand the control + wheel option to make things larger.

If she wants a simpler operating system, she could use a custom Android launcher (there are several around, but I can't recommend any because I don't know which ones are still available), and for Windows 10, I recommend Dolphin Guide.

However, there is software that will make the operating systems accessible as they are. Again, I don't use Android, so I don't know what the low-vision options are, but check out www.inclusiveandroid.com and for Windows check out ZoomText.

I'm not really sure, then. That doesn't really sound like a VI thing.
