How Can my Girlfriend Cope with Being Blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by kakokapolei
My girlfriend of 2 years was just admitted to the ER a couple of days ago after seeing floaters and flashing lights in her vision and the doctors told her she’s been experiencing some retinal detachment in her right eye. She is going to get surgery tomorrow to get it fixed but won’t see anything but lights and shadows for about 2-6 weeks, but there’s a chance that she won’t get her vision back at all. Normally the success rates for these surgeries are pretty high. but she is already blind in one eye and her good eye already isn’t so good, which complicates things. She has been half blind as a result of retinopathy of prematurity. Unfortunately, I’m unable to visit her due to financial reasons and her family still doesn’t know about me yet (it’s a long distance thing). Right now we are trying to get as much time together as possible doing the things we normally love doing while she still has her vision. Her biggest fear is going blind, especially since she’s an artist and LOVES looking at artwork and creating art. How would she cope with the recovery process, or in the worst case scenario, going completely blind, and how can I help her get as comfortable as possible through this situation?

Update: she made a post about this explaining her thoughts and feelings about this

First it's time to introduce yourself to her family. Especially the situation because if you really love and want to help you will be her strength her eyes. When you can financially go. Learn blindness. The cane, Braille, etc. Also recommend Be My Eyes app. It's my favourite app. She can call and volunteers answer if she needs help when no one is present. If she has a bad experience she can review bad. You also can get it and may get a call from her. Of course you can FaceTime. But it's very useful. You know sculpture is art. Also you can paint blind. She’ll find her art. I hope everything goes well.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely check out the Be My Eyes app. She’s actually open to the idea of pottery, and would love to create music, so I guess the art part should be okay.

don’t really know what to say beside - hi, I’m someone who suffered from several retina dettachements and I still love art and find ways to enjoy it. if you want to, there’s this youtube channel all about sight loss and it’s called Life After Sight Loss TV. the dude talks about a lot of thing, from grieving your sight, to how to use technology or how to embrace your blindness, he really helped me with my journey.

I myself suffer from ROP and have had the same surgery 7 years ago. (When I had it I had to look facedown for two weeks for it to heal correctly,)

I am now suffering with other eye problems, but not due to the ROP surgery. One cataract later and it is doing as well as it can be.

I am a musician and something new always comes up with my vision. I am terrified of going blind, but if I do I am not going to let it stop me. One of the things I found that helped me keep confidence in myself is watching blind youtubers (such as Molly Burke). They still make videos, some even edit the videos themselves. With technology these days you can do amazing things without vision.

Anyway, I like talking about my vision, but back on track. I would try and go be with her. Of course at the very least help and support her.

That’s actually great to hear! I was so scared about her going totally blind because her good eye is already pretty messed up, and that might somehow reduce the chances of her having a successful surgery.

I’m blind in right eye and have multiple detachments in left but can still see ok (20/70).

Love being a volunteer on Be My Eyes - wish I got more calls.

The book , “the obstacle is the way” helped me a lot.

Best of luck to you and her.

Love and support is always the way to go.

Also it seems you already have experience with her one eye. If you love and want to help both of you will be fine.
