Needing “life-hack” ideas for my dad (self.Blind)
submitted by Gregthetomatoe
Hello, my dads situation is that he is now 90% blind and is also mostly in wheelchair, although he can walk short distances if I guide his walker. We got him a Gooogle Home Mini and a Chromecast to control his tv/Netflix/YouTube/Spotify. He also now has a watch that’s speaks the time. What other life hacks would anyone suggest to make his life more inclusive and easier?

Ps. He is in a nursing home, so he has that sort of equipment available to him.

The Roku stick that I have is perfect for someone without sight. It has a simple way to activate The screen reader that it uses.
As long as you turn on audio description for Netflix, he can scroll and find whatever content he wants to find. Hulu is also accessible with the stick, but Hulu doesn’t have audio descriptive shows, if they do, somebody should let me know LOL.
Personally, I don’t mind watching shows that don’t have audio description, but it’s always nice when it does.

Thanks.

Thanks. He’s never watched anything with it on. We will give it a try

It depends what kind of stuff he wants to do, can you give us a list?

I’m not exactly sure. His interests are mostly tv, movies, and music. But I’m hoping to find gadgets or things that will help him through life or give him some joy as he has battled with depression while losing his sight.

Turn on audio description for Netflix. Audio description is a narrative service which describes visual details that are important to the story. Not all movies and shows have it. All Netflix originals have audio description tracks and most the Disney movies. You can check whether something has AD by going into the audio options. $1

You might want to try www.audiovault.net for movies with audio description.

If he wants a phone, you could look at Iphones and voiceover but I’d not recommend a huge memory, 32 gig should be fine.

Thanks, I will check it out. He says he doesn’t want a cell phone and still remembers how to use his by feel, but thanks.

Have you heard of orcam glasses? They are galsses with a camera attached to the side (quite subtly) they can read out what your looking at and recognize faces and feed audio to the wearer.

Looks really neat. Unfortunately way out of his price range.
bradley22 1 points 4y ago
True but they’re also very expensive.
BodachanS 1 points 4y ago
Yeah, it sucks that this stuff is so expensive.

It does.
