Asking for help from blind and visually impaired individuals on urban wayfinding! (self.Blind)
submitted by goodenin
Hi! I am working on a design thinking project for school and would l like to get a better understanding of what the experiences of VI and blind people are when it comes to navigating immediate surroundings in urban environments.

Currently, LiDARs (light based radars) and object detection and recognition technology are being developed for autonomous cars to allow them to scan, understand, and navigate the environment. I am trying to see if the same technology could be translated into a device for VI/blind people to navigate their immediate environments?

My questions are: what navigation apps have you found helpful? What are your experiences with wayfinding information that is provided in a tactile manner, for example tactile maps? If a stream of wayfinding information could be provided in a tactile manner (for example instead of verbal cues) that it would free up your ability to use audio for other uses?

Thank you in advance for your answers!! This is my first time researching with a target population so I hope my questions are open ended enough to be able to empathize and ideate from your experiences!

It would be really great if there was a way to map crossing with button-activated lights to help for a safe journey.

I would also appriciate vibrations when I need to turn.

What does this mean?

It would be nice if Maps or whatever would tell you which crosswalks had pedestrian lights fo busy intersections.

I think it means that the app would light green or red based on what the light at the other side of the crosswalk says.

Hi! thanks for your input! As for button activated lights, would this be lights in the ground to help guide you across the street? And for vibrations, how much information would you need to navigate? (i.e. just vibrations when to turn and stop or more detailed ones like to shift slightly right)

Thanks again!

Well, I use my phone on "walking directions" often and the turn here, turn there as an audio command is sufficient, it would just be nice if it vibrated for additional sensory accessibility. Vibrations when the phone is giving a command, that may or may not be distinguished by the the command.

And no, I don't mean lights in the ground. I mean traffic lights that make it safe for pedestrians should be accounted for in pedestrian direction mapping.
