Binaural Recordings? (self.Blind)
submitted by Clumster
Hey everyone, I live on a remote island which is a bird sanctuary, I've been making microphones for a few years and have made several binaural heads for 3D audio recordings (You may have seen the barbershop one on youtube). I don't know if it's a big thing in the blind community? Are you guys aware of binaural audio recordings? If you haven't heard them before they are quite cool but I'm sure they would sound better for you.

Seeing as blind people use their ears to experience the world, I was thinking of making a binaural tour around the island but there are lots of cool possibilities to explore. For example a year or so ago my brother and I went out with a couple of them on a long stretch of road and recorded a car flooring it straight towards the head and utterly obliterating it. I've had some ideas of cool things to record, but I didn't really have a reason to do it until I thought of you guys. Let me know what you think, if people are interested I'd be happy to make some recordings.

Update: So I went out last night. Although still having some issues as there is a fair amount of gear to carry in the bush in the dark. If we are lucky I may be able to get you guys some Tokoeka (Kiwi) mating calls. I would wager that if I can get that it may be a first in binaural.

Keep in mind, if you do end up making recordings it might not be a bad idea to additionally compile into a library and make a few dollars on sites such as sonniss. You never know who might want these for a game/production. I say why not?

Yeah that's not a bad idea. I didn't realise games had got into it. I was thinking about some of the blind people who would find it difficult to travel to some of the places where I could take my recording gear. One idea we had, considering I am near a great white shark breeding area, was to build a rig of microphones to record the sound of being eaten by a great white.

I don't really have a feel for the blind community as I've only got one friend who is blind.

If you do end up making these, I’m sure they’ll be appreciated by many more than myself. Good luck

Oh wow your the barbershop guy? I loved that thing! Anything you record I would appreciate, but if it's taking advantage of the strengths inherent in binaural recording E.G. that car one you described, I'd love it just that much more.

Hey there, no, I'm not the person who did the barbershop recording, although I will be in a 'literal' barbershop quartet sometime in October so I may be able to record our practice which I think would sound good.

Yeah I've heard them.

Smarter every day on YouTube has a good second channel for these
There use to be some great iOS games that used it

Not interested in hearing any recordings, but I record in binaural all the time.

Binaural recordings are life.

Oh cool, are you using a binaural head? Or do you have glasses?

I use the Sennheiser Ambio smart headset (only records to iPhone though).

It's absolutely amazing other than not so good bass filter for loud concerts.
