Where can I get a TL;DR on braille formatting (self.Blind)
submitted by Altie-McAltface
I was taught braille originally as a kid, and have returned to it after an accident has left me with less usable vision. I have forgotten braille formatting rules, like indentation, how to indicate titles and headings, lists etc. Is there a concise summary somewhere online where I can get basics?

A related question I haven't been able to find the answer to is how to indicate higher level math in braille (UEB or Nemeth). Plenty of stuff for simple math like arithmetic and some algebra, but how do I indicate things like integrals, vectors, partial differentials etc. I don't really NEED to know, I changed majors in college after realizing math and I don't get along well. I'm more curious than anything.

indentation: to tab in Braille I usually do two spaces before the text.

Braille Lists: To write Braille lists I find it's best to use a - (3-6) and then write the text.

Headings: If you want italics use dots 4-6, or double that for longer titles. For regular titles the Caps Lock for Braille is two capitals.

You know that dots 4-6 isn't valid anymore because of UEB.

oh right forgive me for being old fashioned, I think that most blind people would still recognize it, it's just that my refreshable braille display used that and I was not sure what the new italics symbol is.

Italic symbols for UEB (in a nutshell):
italic symbol indicator: dots 4-6 then 2-3
italic word indicator: dots 4-6 then 2
italic passage indicator (three words or longer): dots 4-6 then 2-3-5-6
italic passage terminator: dots 4-6 then 3

Also, in UEB, there are different typeform indicators for bold, underline, italic& script notation. Headings in print are often written in bold, not italic, so these symbols wouldn't normally be used for headings; and typeform indicators that apply to the entire content of the heading are omitted.

I'm guessing you're in the US; if not, let me know because braille formatting is different in each country. In the US, I don't know of a tl;dr, but you could take a quick look through the official book (only the US could get away with a book this big): http://www.brailleauthority.org/formats/formats2016.html

For your question about math, the American Printing House for the Blind has made tutorials on Nemeth and UEB math symbols. Here is a link to the Nemeth one, and there is a link at the top of the page to move to the UEB one. https://nemeth.aphtech.org
