Architectural Conservation (self.Blind)
submitted by voidlime
I have recently been reading articles about how the visually impaired experience architecture and appreciate the spatial qualities, but it led me to another question: what are your opinions on the conservation of buildings?

I don't think this is something that one would normally think of, whether sighted or visually impaired, and answers will probably be subjective. However, I thought it would be an interesting perspective to see if a historic building is as significant to you, or whether it is of little significance if the building gets demolished or not. (Perhaps the tactile, sound and smell aspects are unique for such historic buildings and are enjoyable to be in even if you can't fully see the space?).

I appreciate your time!

I think historical sites should always be preserved when they can be. It doesn't matter if I can't see it, it still has value. And maybe I can go inside and look around in a way that is more meaningful to me.

If it’s a historical place, that’s cool. But I hate that they get a free pass on not complying with ADA laws. FOr instance, many of these buildings are not required to have an elevator. I’m blind, and I can walk up and down stairs, but I do encourage universal accessibility.

I love history and there is a lot to learn from old buildings and sites that may not only be visual. Also just because I may not see the building doesn't mean others shouldn't be able to.

It is important to me because I love history even if I can’t see it very well.
