Finding truly opaque glasses? (self.Blind)
submitted by taratarabobara
I have a condition where any light at all is painful. It's not quite normal "light sensitivity", more that light makes me automatically try to move my eye muscles and the parts of my brain that can do that are badly damaged.

I'm trying to find options for solidly opaque glasses, ideally ones that wrap around and maybe even gasket to my face. I will have brief moments in my life I can take them off to use what vision I have left, but I really need to cut out all possible light in a way that looks a little more serious than wearing a sleep mask out in the day. I've thought about solid paint, but I don't want anything that could flake off into my eyes.

I think you can get some from any place in your area or nearby that does equipment evaluations and such for the blind and low vision. If you can't go in person, you can call. Are you working with Vocational Rehabilitation by chance? They can often help with getting you a lead on dark glasses. I know you won't be able to get what you're looking for in any store, unless welder's goggles might work for you (they did the trick for a friend of mine, but they aren't opaque).

That's a very good suggestion! Another idea might be tinting film that you can put on glasses that you already have.

This isn’t glasses so might or might not suit your purposes, but my wife recently got me a $1 to help with my light sensitivity—it’s a sleep mask that is very comfortable and truly obscures 100% of light. Might be good at least for certain situations. Edit: whoops, obviously I didn’t read carefully enough! My bad.

Mindfolds are great. I use one to practice Braille. They use them in rehab centers to teach non visual techniques to people with residual vision. NB they melt in the summer.
