Etiquette Help (self.Blind)
submitted by whel_sar
Just a quick question for those who are visually impaired. There’s a gentlemen, who is blind, who comes into my work quite frequently. Every time he comes in I get his drink, napkins, and food for him. When I set it down, I always let him know which side they’re on; “Your drink is on your right,” etc. Is this something that’s nice to do,? Is there something better I could do? What’s the proper etiquette here?

If you need to be more specific, you can use the clock method. If the plate is a clock face, with 12 o'clock being at the top, you can give the approximate location using the hour markers.

You're doing good. :) I find when a server gets more detailed than drink location, it feels pretty awkward and a bit dehumanising. It's helpful to get assistance with silverware and napkins sometimes too. But you can always ask if he needs anything else. :)

I appreciate when people do this, particularly if I'm talking to someone and don't realise they're dropping something off for me. You're a rock star, and I'd tip a little extra just for that in this guy's place.

I use the clock analogy when describing, to my blind husband, the location of things on the table (and on his plate) when I set them down in front of him - ie juice glass at 2, coffee cup at 10 ; meat at 6, veg at 7-9 etc... if he needs further assistance, he'll just ask me and I'll tell him.

Hi 👋! My boyfriend is blind and we are planning a future together! Would you mind if I messaged you to get some pointers?

Hi, what you are doing is just fine. The clock method is probably not needed in your case.
