Any recommended monocular for traveling around? (self.Blind)
submitted by TheJsUser
Some years ago, in a mobility training class, A monocular was presented to me as a helpful tool to recognize buses signs, so I can know when my bus is coming. I found it pretty useful, but never actually got mine, just used one I borrowed to the institution. Today I really need one since I'm facing the need to ride just one bus to come from my job to home, in a station where almost 15 different lines of buses stop to pick people up, so i'm really needing a monocular to notice when my bus is coming and if I'm riding the right one, I've ridden wrong ones a couple of times by now.

So, I'm trying to order a monocular over Amazon, but there are a lot of options there, and I need to be really sure of my purchase. I'm not having the opportunity to test all of them before chose one, so I need your recommendation, if any of you use the same method. I want it to be like, not too big, want something that fits in my hand, not a..like a telescope that everybody is gonna notice, want it to be as sutil but also as functional as posible.

If any of you have one to suggest me and provide me with the link, that would be wonderful!

If you have access to a low vision clinic, they can tell you which magnifications will work best for you and then you can purchase using that information

I got one of those in the 80s, also from some government thing (the texas commission for the blind at the time) ..wish I still had something like it now! It was super small and had super zoom.

Oh my gosh!!! I have the BEST monocular ever! It was a birthday gift so I don’t know if it’s on amazon, but I found a link to the manufacturer! It’s REALLY good! I used it on my honeymoon and could actually see the Italian architecture! It’s seriously amazing, and quite adjustable for different distances.

Depends on a few considerations. If you have glasses, you want an eye relief distance where you can put the monocular to your glasses without having to remove them. Second is the field of view and your ability to use the field of view to find the bus number in a timely manner (i.e. targeting) plus magnification. 6x will be different from 10x with the tradeoff in field of view vs bulk and size owing to the diameter of the lenses 3'rd is build quality vs cost. I bought a carson 10x - 50mm field of view monocular that works well but I really need to get some threadlock on it since pieces want to come apart on it. But I paid something like $30 vs a few hundred for a Nikon or some similar
