How Times Have Changed (self.Blind)
submitted by PolariChat
When I was at school I had a teacher tell me blind/deaf people from single parent households (like me) are put in big institutions because they are not able to look after themselves and are uneducated.

Today I am training teachers on diversity and inclusion.

Often the barrier is not the disability but rather societal attitudes towards the disability

Agree 100%. This idea implies that these people are unable to adapt on their own. I mean there have been blind people working farms 1000 years ago, why would advancements in technology hinder this process?

I know plenty of blind entrepreneurs, licensed professionals and successful corporate types that are simply making their way in the world. My friends who are total are world class problem solvers by dint of nescessity. Getting on with life to be socially integrated and normative is simply an expectation.

This is what I'd like to hear more of. Less fearmongering and propaganda, more good news of human progress.
