Discrimination-as-a-service: Hirevue - A face-scanning algorithm increasingly decides whether you deserve the job (self.Blind)
submitted by wyongriver
Here's the link to the Washington Post article: $1

Most interesting quote: " HireVue said its system dissects the tiniest details of candidates’ responses — their facial expressions, their eye contact and perceived “enthusiasm” — and compiles reports companies can use in deciding whom to hire or disregard. "

For our sighted readers, most severely vision impaired and blind people have trouble with eye contact. This system can remove low vision and blind people automatically from the job application pool, without the need for a human to do it.

Now the perfectly difficult task of finding work, just got harder! :-) Far out! :-)

Basically a hiring service to ensure you get the least qualified applicants but I guess they’ll be pretty. Screw these assholes. I hope every company that uses them goes under like they deserve for being so shallow and short sighted.

Let's figure it out and start naming names. And BLAST this on Twitter!!

Dyson do it. Most awkward interview I’ve had, and then they want the face-to-face interview afterwards if you get through.
darkness_is_great 14 points 3y ago
Let's raise HOLY HELL. Who's with me?
bigblindmax 8 points 3y ago
And they wonder why people are getting fed up with this rotten economic order.
darkness_is_great 5 points 3y ago
It's gonna boil over and the result ain t gonna be pretty.
CloudyBeep 1 points 3y ago
I doubt it. AI is entering just about every industry in some way.

I have done soooooooooo many hirevues and I strongly dislike it.

Many times companies that use hirevue allow you to send your resume instead if you need an accommodation, but whether they actually look at it is another story (I’m mainly talking about big banks, Goldman Sachs etc...)

It makes me wonder how many people who didn’t make “adequate” eye contact with the camera (due to disability or simply not knowing) lost the opportunity for a job.
bigblindmax 3 points 3y ago
Yeah I have nystagmus and am pretty fucked if this becomes the norm. I can’t imagine involuntary eye movement does wonders for one’s “employability score”.

Fuck whoever made this with a hot poker.
darkness_is_great 3 points 3y ago
I hope whoever made it becomes blind and gets burned by fire. Then i want him to lose all his money because he got cancer. Then after that he can die.
CosmicBunny97 3 points 3y ago
I hope this doesn’t become a thing here in Australia.
darkness_is_great 3 points 3y ago
We need more regulation of hiring practices. NOW!
darkness_is_great 3 points 3y ago
Let's figure out which companies use this system. Let's NAME names!!
CloudyBeep 5 points 3y ago
The NFB is great at this sort of thing. Let's make sure that they know about this because I'd say that they're some of the people best placed to be able to intervene.
darkness_is_great 2 points 3y ago
Let's do it. Lets stop these mofos.
Anhur 2 points 3y ago

Time to boycott Dyson.
TrippingWithoutSight 1 points 3y ago
What a load of bullshit. This will never be successful.
Undrende_fremdeles 1 points 3y ago
An old thread, but it is in use many places. Britain, Dyson (the vacuums).
TrippingWithoutSight 2 points 3y ago
I'm in the UK so I should 'attempt' to get hired with them just to see if they'd discriminate on me based on having closed eyes. ;)
Undrende_fremdeles 3 points 3y ago
What you can do is attempt it, and then email them, asking if this is true and you'd like a full disclosure of how your video will be treated, analyzed etc.

They don't tell you anything about this in obvious terms, but maybe in some hidden fine print somewhere?

while a gut reaction to this is understandable given the popularity of increasingly dystopian developments in the world lately, and the media/entertainment industry's fueling of those fears, if you guys would read to the bottom of that article, you might notice the rebuttal given has some potential merit.

Does that mean this isn't a problem for disabled people, or that it's not sudo-science with little basis in fact like lie detectors or blood type discrimination? No probably not, but screaming from the rooftops without first disproving the counterclaims of the other party, or even fully processing them, isn't going to make a lasting impact on the problem.

Yeah, you'll probably get them to cave under public pressure, at first, but the tech is inevitable regardless, and they will just use soothing arguments, grease the right palms, and try another tact. If they don't, someone else will, it's just too big of an opportunity for them not to.

If you want to make a lasting change, you need to go through the right channels and try to get the practice banned outright, and that again means bringing facts to the table that disprove theirs, which means being calm but firm and being willing to listen to their arguments so that you can respond to them appropriately.

Anything else is just a band-aid on the issue, essentially, "slacktivism" for the sake of being outraged at the man.

If I'm missing something obvious, let me know, but at this point, I stand by all I've said.
darkness_is_great 2 points 3y ago
Go jump in a lake. I bet you discriminate against people too. Lemme guess. You are a manager who supports this.
Superfreq2 0 points 3y ago
Calm down there friend before you burst something! And maybe grow a thicker skin and learn to read better while your add it.

LOL a manager? Hardly... I'm not even employed right now, I'm a mid 20s totally blind guy since nearly birth.
I'm just capable of critical thinking and able to suppress my emotional reactions when it counts. You know, like a mature human being does?

Come up with a better reason to hate me other than reeeee! burn the witch because it doesn't agree with me!

Individuals are generally pretty smart, but groups of people are always more stupid, so don't get swept up in something if you haven't thought it through your self first.

I know that being outraged and going after a common target feels good and all, especially if you feel powerless in your every day life, but it cheapens your entire cause and just makes you feel shittier in the end after the initial high wares off.

Either way, this whole your either 100% with us or 100% against us shit needs to stop, it's making the world a worse place every day, and wishing ill on people who's opinions don't align with yours doesn't exactly make your own opinion look so great.
darkness_is_great 2 points 3y ago
So how are you gonna feel when you don't get a job because of a computer program designed to discriminate against people? Oh wait, it doesn't affect you so you don't care.

Hope you get unemployed and lose everything ass.
