I don't understand the question. First off, do you mean holding it like just normally using it, or talking on it. I don't really hold it up to my ear unless I'm in a call. Also, if you're holding it in portrait mode, the home button will not be to the right or left, it'll be down.

I'm also wondering why it matters. Hold the phone the way it works for you and don't let other people tell you how to do it lol.

Hold your phone the way you feel it's comfortable for you. Don't worry about what other people do.

I hold mine with the home button at the bottom.

I too tend to hold it with home at the bottom, using the thumb of my holding hand to work the screen if my other hand isn't available.
Of course when typing I rotate the phone so I can braille in. Then I use both palms to hold the top and bottom edges of the phone, giving my 6 fingers screen access to write. Unless there's a convenient flat surface to hand, but i'm so often up and about I rarely put the phone down to operate it.
