Anyone from Salem, MA or Boston? (self.Blind)
submitted by psychgamer2014
Hi all,

I’m about to finish up my M.Ed. in special education as well as getting my license as a behavior analyst (assuming my state will license me) and I’m looking into the Salem, MA and Boston areas to potentially move post-grad. The reason I’m looking into leaving where I am now is because the laws around blindness and visual impairment are draconian at best (e.g. I had to travel out of state to take my teacher licensing exams because low vision accommodations aren’t permitted on licensing exams within the state).

Are Salem and Boston easy to navigate? What is it like trying to find employment in the school systems with a disability? I’m also considering the dual MSW and EdD program at Boston University to move into school counseling or doing clinical work with children, so I’m also interested in employment prospects within the hospitals as well.

If it helps, I’m 27 and I have a diagnosis of ROP, severe astigmatism, and severe nystagmus with a visual acuity of 20/200 in both eyes a visual field of 15 and 20 degrees in my left and right eyes respectively.

I would definitely recommend posting this in the r/Boston subreddit. I currently live and go to school in Boston and while I find it easy to navigate thanks to public transport, I admit I’m a sighted person so my opinion is less meaningful.
