What do you guys do when there is no Audio Description for a movie or a TV series? (self.Blind)
submitted by KingWithoutClothes
Hello everyone,

I really love AMC's *The Walking Dead*. My vision has gotten so bad during this past year that I've began to watch everything with audio description. Without it, I can't really enjoy a movie or series anymore.

During the summer break, I wanted to watch season 9 because it had finally dropped on Netflix. I was super excited because I had been waiting for this for almost two years.

Then came the big bummer... there's no audio description. I couldn't believe it. There's all kinds of obscure shows on Netflix that do have audio description but somehow a famous, multi-million production like *The Walking Dead* doesn't have it. I tried to watch it anyway but quit after the first 4 episodes because I was frustrated. I had no idea what was going on.

Is there a solution to this or do I simply have to accept that my TWD fun is over now? Also, is it possible that Netflix does have audio description for this show in some countries but not in others? I'm in Switzerland so maybe somewhere else it's different? In that case I might be able to watch it with a VPN.

Thanks for your advice!

Either ask a friend to watch with me, make do with the shows raw audio, or look up episodes synopses after I’ve watched the episode.

This sucks, I’ve been looking into this myself and haven’t come up with any definite solutions yet. However this is what I came across; a list of all the available Netflix with AD in the U.S.A here http://acb.org/adp/netflixad.html and I discovered an app l, called Activeiw, that allows you to access audio description in cinemas via your IPhone, so maybe this could work in other ways too? I’m yet to experiment. There is also a feature within the IPhone that you can select in Settings - Accessibility- Audio Description which automatically turns on AD if available. Another possible option is to watch YouTube reviews after watching an episode as they commonly describe and breakdown the scenes in detail.

Don't get excited about Actiview; it has less than 30 films, and it is unlikely that more will be added in the near future.

Ugh, well that sucks

I just checked and there are no audio descriptions available for it on US Netflix, either.

I don't use descriptive audio (not a fan - I'd rather listen to shows without it), so this may not help much, but if you can't find any, my suggestion would be to find a brief episode summary before watching and see if that makes it easier to follow along.

I actually do this alot except in reverse. Eg Ill watch the mandalorian then watch youtube to hear/see all the things I missed.

Wikipedia publishes brief episode summaries. Some popular TV series also have their own websites on Wikia, and some of the episode summaries on these websites are quite detailed.

It doesn’t bother me, I can take it or leave it.

I feel your pain, OP. Breaking Bad also is not described.

I hope in time AMC will get their back catalogue audio described.

The first season is at least

If it was, it isn’t anymore.

This is unlikely. However, Mad Men is on Netflix and does have audio description.
KingWithoutClothes [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Why do you think it is unlikely? Is AMC known to be particularly ignorant about these kind of things?
CloudyBeep 1 points 3y ago
In a nutshell, there are a lot of complications regarding production costs, distribution, licensing and technical complexity.
Prefect316 2 points 3y ago
Nice! Thanks for the tip.

If audio description isn't available, I just don't watch it. Netflix has so much content with AD that I doubt I'll ever not have something good I can watch. Admittedly, I'm not in your position where I started watching a series but couldn't continue due to a change in vision.

I can only speak for myself personally. Simply, I don't watch the TV series.

Instead, I flip over to documentaries, radio shows, stand up comedy, and things of that nature. Plus various reality shows, and for example, with how Gordon Ramsay explains a plate of food sometimes, the audio is probably almost better than the visual, lol.

As for the radio show thing, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but:

$1

Gives me a good laugh at least.
