Can anyone recommend me a screen reader to suit my needs? Ideally free but I'll take what I can get. I am partially sighted and have had a lot of frustrations with programs like JAWS that read literally every single thing on the page. What I want is to be able to select just the text I want read. That and maybe have it read links/buttons I click on or hover my mouse over. I do actually have ZoomText on my laptop, though currently I've just been using the visual options like resizing text and adjusting the color and contrast.
Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions!

I'd recommend Fusion, which is a blend of ZoomText and JAWS that will let you point at areas you'd like read - rather than have everything announced. You could also get an app like Read&Write, which is a text-to-speech app that will let you highlight text in web pages and documents and have it read aloud.

ZoomText does have a version that also reads off text as well.
The other option is NVDA, which is free, but it reads off pretty much everything on the page. That's kind of the point of the program, though. There are different controls to locate what you want.
There is also VoiceOver, but that is an Apple only product. It is also free, and integrated into almost all Apple products.

Use TextAloud, it's what you're looking for. You set up hotkeys to read selected text or have the clipboard automatically read when it updates.

I use NVDA and it's pretty nice, can read alt txt plus if there's an issue, you can go to their github and leave a message for the updaters who respond in a couple days W a patch most of the time

ChromeOS recently got a select to read out loud option alongside its ChromeVox screenreader.

There are settings (Verbosity) that are configurable in JAWS (I think NVDA too)

Yes. I also use NVDA because I feel like JAWS is an overrated wast of money. Why should I have to pay over $1000 for something to tell me what's on my screen?
