Movie suggestions? (self.Blind)
submitted by gwynaweird
Anyone have a beloved movie with a blind/ VI character? My mother's birthday is coming soon. I bought her Quest for Camelot for Christmas and when she realized what it was told me why she loved it and wanted a replacement for our lost copy. Garrett is blind but is a hero and is treated well. The two headed dragon is a favorite point too.

I was hoping for a few suggestions to make her a bundle.

Zatoichi the blind swordsman is a great samurai series of movies with the titular character being blind. According to this kung-fu movie forum, it has apparently been dubbed into English but the commentators are not sure where to find the dubbed copy. There are several movies, and at least one more recent remake (2003 with Beat Takeshi) and Amazon is showing all of these with English subtitles so if you have a subtitle-reader that could work. I think old samurai movies would be great as just audio, with the small sounds of shifting feet, the long quiet pauses as tension builds, the sharp clash of steel, and spaghetti western style of over-acting. Zatoichi is in my top 5 Samurai movies of all time, and your post reminded me to watch it again so thanks!

Edit - full movie is on Youtube - $1

Also, there are a LOT more movies than I thought! Looks like I am going to have some to catch up with too!

I've seen #17 and it has a GREAT final showdown in falling snow.

Bird box, no spoilers, but hero is blind.

Dark Victory, really old movie.

Scent of a Woman, ny husband suggested. I’ve never seen it.

The Miracle Worker

Scent of a Woman is/was one of my favorites. Without spoiling it, it's kind of intense and deals with some mental health topics as well. OP might wanna read synopsis before gifting it.

Good idea. I didn’t think about that. Thanks!

Just in case it didn't occur to you, blind people like watching movies that don't have blind characters. Blind people generally enjoy watching movies more if they have an audio description track. Audio description is an additional audio track that describes the visuals of a movie so that blind people can follow the story.

It did occur to me. My mother has been going blind my whole life. I'm not new to this. She shared a touching moment with me and I had hoped to expound upon this and give her more characters to find commonalities with. It was going to be a themed present.

I thought it would have because you're buying the gift for your mother, but I thought I should mention it in case you hadn't thought of it.

Blink. It's a decent thriller. It's no spoiler to say it's about someone who recovers sight but she plays it with a decent amount of attitude.

Also, is it me, or is "blink" blind person slang for blind people in at least some circles.

There’s www.audiovault.net for audio described movies without the visuals.
