My vision is holding me back on my studies(self.Blind)
submitted by Icen_
Hello, r/blind
Someone on r/studying told me i should post this here aswell.
Here is the original post:
As you may have guessed from the title, i'm looking for some advice. I love learning and i love reading since i was very young. However, reading for extensive periods of time has become something frustrating, painful and sometimes disheartening due to my increasingly worse condition. It has progressed to the point that glasses and contact lenses are not enough anymore, so i have no choice but to wait for a donor for a transplant, which is not happening anytime soon.
Anyway, as much as i love reading, it's becoming impractical for me to use that to study. What should i do?
Thanks in advance.

Are you in the US? If so you can apply for BTBL, they have tons and tons of audio books and braille books for free. I believe there's also large print. If no I would search for large print or audio book versions of whatever you're trying to read. Good luck! Im also a big reader, blindness definitely isn't enough to stop me from loving books!
Another thing, it's not as great as an actual audio book but if there's even an e-book version you can get that and have a screen reader read it to you. Again, not the best, but if it's the only option ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

You said that you have to squint to use your phone, so you should investigate the accessibility features on your phone such as screen magnification or a screen reader. What smartphone do you use?

Hey there. Yes i've already took a look at it. It allowed me to change the font size. It's currently on the max setting. It used to be fine a couple of years ago but my condition keeps worsening. Thank you for the suggestion

Then you might want to learn to use the screen reader. If you have an iPhone, it's called VoiceOver, and if you have an Android phone, it's called TalkBack. You use different gestures to operate your phone, and it reads aloud the items on the screen.

Yes, i tried that too, it's a bit weird, but the main problem is that it doesn't recognize my PDFs text. I'm on Android.

Your PDFs must be a scanned image of text. You'll need to use an OCR app to convert the images of text to readable text.

Listening to books really helps for me personally. In fact it helped me to fall back in love with reading! I use audiobooks as well as the Kindle app with Voiceover. I’m sure you can get a way to speak screen too.
I don’t know much about studying materials but perhaps an app like Voice Dream Reader for iOS or Read and Write will be beneficial for you?

What amount of vision do you have?
If you're in Canada, CELA Library, Bookshare and your local public library have lots of large print, braille and audiobook options. If you're in College or University, their library should have selections as well.
For online articles, you can try Natural Reader. It's free and works on most sites, including Reddit. Both Mac and Windows have built-in magnifiers.

My vision is really poor. I can only read things on my phone by squinting my eyes or putting it up to my face. Either way, it worsens my condition faster. I don't live in Us, Uk or Canada. I live in south america.

Try the app called Seeing AI. It only works on iPhones (I know it sucks). But the good thing you can use an old iPhone too. I normally use an Android phone but I have an old iPhone 5S and the app works really well.
You just open the app and point it at any written text and it will read it to you.

BTBL like someone else mentioned is an option; I personally prefer Bookshare. If you're a student, it's completely free and I've found the book format more amenable to flexibility. You can download Voice Dream reader on your iPhone/iPad, and make the text as large as you need or have it read to you when your eyes get too tired.
