What to do for a blind person (self.Blind)
submitted by hazza1022
My uncle lost his vision for now 5-6 years. I never thought about how his whole life changed because of it, he lost his job as a professor, he helps in any way he can to support his family by selling food. He is always so positive and full of energy, he is so independent and makes everyone in the family smile. I’m 19 but in the future I want to help him financially and other things. But for now, what can I do for him to enjoy life more? What phone is the best for blind people?
I hope I didn’t offend anyone,

Hi, it’s wonderful that you have such compassion for your uncle and want to make a difference.

What part of the world are you in? In most places, there are well-established rehabilitation services available to help people who have lost their sight. There are many blind professors out there, so if your uncle were to obtain assistance with using the tools and techniques of blindness, there is no reason why he couldn’t continue to use his talents and share his knowledge with others.
There’s certainly a big adjustment, but many people who go blind pick themselves up and have meaningful careers and lives.
I was born blind so it’s different when you’ve known nothing else, but I have also met very happy, fulfilled and successful people who have lost their sight later, sometimes in tragic circumstances.
Regarding your phone question, I’m writing this to you on my iPhone. It has a built-in screen reader called VoiceOver which makes the phone fully accessible and incredibly empowering. There are many blindness specific apps available such as talking book services and GPS to assist a blind person to know what’s around them. And many other general apps are accessible, including every app built into the phone.
Best of luck.

We live in the border with Mexico, sadly he lives across where there are no programs for blind people at least in the city he lives in, but soon he will get a visa to the U.S. and by the time he does it, hopefully I can find some assistance for him to learn other things. Like I said, I don’t have the resources now but thank you for your response. I’m sorry if this sounds weird but do you have someone always by your side? I don’t really know any blind people besides by uncle and my grandma but because of her old age and other complications, she is always with my aunt. Again thank you.

YOu might like to take a look at the National Federation of the Blind’s website. Http://nfb.org which has plenty of free literature and info that may help.

No, I travel independently so don’t have the need to have anyone with me. I’m the Chief Executive of the organisation I work for and we have 120 staff and 22 offices nationally. This is nothing particularly exceptional. If a blind person can get the training and tools they need, blindness need not hold them back.

I really hope your Uncle might be able to get assistance from one of the many providers of blindness rehab in the US.
