Relumino and Gear VR for visually impaired. (self.Blind)
submitted by hope-opotamus
I was on social media and someone posted a feel good video about a young girl using Esight. Having dealt with Esight over a year ago for my VI son I got mad again. Esight, IMO, is garbage technology for the price and for my young 12 yr old son. Also, Esight has predatory sales practices and they rely on "He/She sees for the first time" videos for profit. So I went searching again on Reddit and found a Esight related comment that mentioned Relumino by Samsung. Hook up your phone to Gear VR and download the application through Relumino website via code, not app store. Previous Relumino posts complained about the website not being user friendly for English but that has changed. A lot of people are selling Gear VR for cheap because it came free with their phones. We picked one up for $30 and already own a Samsung Note 8. This will not replace the MATT Connect my kid uses at school but for our time outside sight seeing or at museums this is awesome! Brings an added quality of life to our fun times. $30 > $10k is obviously worth a try. Walking with the VR is a bit tricky when zoomed in but definitely doable with a cane or without with a lead or zoomed out. Anyways, I just wanted to let people who are visually impaired know that this does exist. We had no idea but my kid was really happy we found it. Hope this helps at least one person.

Edit: My son is legally blind, 20/250-400 depending on the day and if he wants to deal with the eye technician that visit, with vision in only one eye. (I say this because we travel 2.5 hrs for eye appts at U of M Kellogg Eye Institute and sometimes all three of us are just too tired and over it when it comes the to teaching students who administer the tests. We rely on his doctor only and she knows him best and his eye pressure is our greatest concern)

I agree regarding the cost of the eSight device (and even their sales practices. I always remind my clients that the people selling the device are salespeople).

However, there are certain design reasons why using a VR set up instead of the eSight set up increases the risk. When zooming in, it cuts down on peripheral vision. That's one of the reasons eSight can be flipped up in that manner.

There is also other options in the processing system for eSight, but not everyone needs or uses those options (contrast, panning, OCR, etc).

I use this exact setup at home and in the shop. Im 20/350ish like your son and it has helped me alot. Same deal, found one on facebook market place for $20 and then bought a cheap clip on wide angle lens for the phone and hacked together a mount. The lens fixes the "zoom in" effect of the world and makes it so what you see agrees with your brains depth perception. Its close enough that I did some tests where I could run with the headset on and not get dizzy or nauseous. My biggest problem is trying to get the phone to run as fast as possible to minimize lag between the screen and camera.
