Wanting to learn braille. Suggestions? (self.Blind)
submitted by LittleTay
So I am slowly losing my vision. (Has been for 8 years now). I can still see enough to work in retail, type and read music, but unable to drive.

I am finally deciding to learn braille and I would like to know if any of you have any good recommendations on where to start such as which books to start with.

Any advice would be much as appreciated too.

If you find someone to teach you braille, you should aim to ensure that they have (1) a braille certification, and (2) prior experience of teaching braille. Just because someone can read braille does not mean that they are fully aware of the rules of braille or of the best teaching strategies to ensure that you learn braille effectively. It's like going to another country and just asking a random person you see on a street to teach you the language—sure you'll learn something, but you'd be better with a qualified teacher. This is why I suggest that if you can't find a braille teacher who is sufficiently qualified, you should enrol in the braille correspondence courses through Hadley because their teachers are qualified and their lessons and teaching strategies have been refined for 100 years.

Hey, wish me luck, blind man who had used Braille all my life going for my Braille certification so I can transcribe Braille for the school boards and etc.

Getting a state rehab teacher to help train would be the best option, but that may not be feasible for a few reasons (distance, location, etc).

Your best bet might be Hadley.

I don't mean to sound rude but google is your best helper, or get in touch with your state or local office that handles low vision accomodations

I started Braille lessons online with Hadley about six months ago. They sent all the physical lesson material bye post and the whole thing is free if you're registered with an official blind institute I believe.

It's quite the time investment but seems to be fairly organized and the order in which they teach you things make a lot of sense

Fingerprint braille. I'm a few weeks in. I say a few to try to obscure the fact that it is super hard and I am caught between total determination to succeed and... laze.
