Is getting a fitbit a really bad idea? (self.Blind)
submitted by blindnessandbees
I have been getting more into fitness lately and kinda... wanna get a fitbit? I have some heart trouble so being able to track my heart rate is a nice bonus plus being able to see how muc calories I burn! Yay, right? But is it worth it when you can barely see? Is the app accessible? Does the device have any accessibility features?

I have a fitbit, but I don’t think it is accessible to be honest.

From what I've heard, the app can be used with VoiceOver. Have you thought about getting an Apple Watch instead?

I have, but I kind of just want something simple and less expensive. But considering my vision loss it might actually be a better bet

I actually have a FitBit I'm not using! I could mail it to you if you're comfortable with that--hopefully you're in the US too?

Such a sweet offer but I live in the Netherlands!

Blast!

I just looked on Amazon, and some fitness trackers run as low as $30 USD. You can download the accompanying apps before buying the device, so maybe try a few to check their accessibility?

You don't necessarily have to purchase the latest model of the Apple Watch, and doing so might make it a more comparable price to a FitBit.

I have developed a braille app for the Fitbit Versa. It's called Fitbraille and uses haptic feedback to represent braille characters so blind/ partially sighted people can access the Time and their Steps count all from their wrist. No VoiceOver required!

Hey friend, I am wearing my Fitbit versa to at the moment, just finished a long cardio session
I love it, the app is not completely accessible. Or it is just that you cannot read your data in the graphs shown but you are able to read the time you spent in heart rate zones and things like that
The device itself is not accessible but if you enable continuous syncing you can just leave the app open on your phone with the focus on your heart rate to hear it updated periodically throughout your work out
And of course aside from the workout data you can see how many active minutes you had see how much sleep you got along with the sleep score
It is pretty nifty.
I had the Apple Watch previous to this Fitbit but decided to switch because the battery life on the wash was so poor and I missed the sleep tracking feature of the Fitbit
Battery on the watch was about a one day and battery with my Fitbit versa two is six days
