What is some technology that Blind or Near Blind people might appreciate?(self.Blind)
submitted by Indigoticus
I'm a student in a class that is focusing on making enabling technology. We pretty much have free range over what we can create, and I thought it might be a cool idea to make something to help blind people. I am very inexperienced when it comes to the issues that yall encounter, so I thought it would be good to get some ideas from the source. What is some hardware or software that you guys would appreciate to have, but has yet to be created or far too expensive to own?
One idea I had was a handheld distance scanner that would relay how far something is by either vibration or tone to help detect above hip level objects and assist in navigation. I have seen a few implementations of this, but it seems not many people use these. My guess is that its essential to have one hand free while the other hand uses a cane, so many people stick with just the cane. There also happens to be glasses that do this, which would free up a hand, but still it seems no one really uses them. Is there something I could do to make this tech useful?
Any ideas are appreciated, as I will pass them on to my classmates.

Just to give you an idea of what already exists so you don't waste time on already existing marketed items:
The distance scanner already exists both with sound and vibration, there was already made a cane as well relying on this tech using two laser points and another one with sonar sound distance measuring. Apps for recognising colors, objects, items, numbers, text etc with AI and apps for communication that helps people with eyesight helping blind people also exists (Be My Eyes) free and available for everyone on this planet with millions of users ready to help the blind. There also already exists screen readers for using computers on both phone IOS and computers (ZoomText, VoiceOver etc). Wearable glasses that read text out loud also exists already. Heat detectors for mounting on drinking cups to allow blind people to pour boiling water into a teacup without getting hurt also exists. Most things you can think of already exists so you could find something that merges some of these things above into one functional unit to make a difference. Tons of equipment for sports like skiing, playing ball (football etc) also exists.

What would be novel would be to take an existing technology that is currently very expensive and make it cheap and readily available.

Didn't know about these heat detectors. I never had much trouble with hot liquids though.

it's called an RNIB liquid level indicator, it can be bought pretty much everywhere including the US, UK, ebay, amazon etc.
I bought some for a family member, they aren't very expensive. They are little square shaped gadgets that you hang on the side of your cup, then two probes stick out and into the cup which is at the same level as where you want your water to be. When the hot water is poured in the cup it then fills up until the water touches the two probes and a loud tone is emitted from the gadget. I think i paid 15 or 20 dollars per piece and they work like a charm, they just need to have their batteries changed after a few years. which takes a few seconds.

Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will keep this in mind.

I'm thinking there may be something out there, but I wish we had a good landmark device. For instance, I get to a party and when I sit at a table I can activate the device. Then when I go get my food, go to the restroom, go dance, or talk with friends in the party I can find my table afterwards.

I like this idea, would it be like an object that you can place down and then use your phone to have it make a noise? Or use an application to give directions back to the device? Elaborate on what functionality you would want the device to have.

I like this idea a lot. I have some vision, but I often have trouble finding my way back to my specific table in a dark restaurant.
Maybe a "beacon" device that you'd place on the table and then a small handheld or wearable device like a bracelet that guided you back to it through vibrations. You could remotely make the beacon make a sound if you needed it to, but being able to get back via haptic feedback from a remote/wearable would be a lot more discrete than pushing a button and making something on the other side of the room make a loud noise.

I agree with this. Vibrations would be much better. Not only more discreet but also more functional in certain environments. If you're at a party and there's loud music, you won't hear any beeping, even if it comes out of your handheld device. Vibrations would make much more sense.

I would propose having a remote and a landmark device. You press the button on the remote and the device chirps. More advance features could include an app with details such as distance from the device and opptions to link with multiple landmark devices. If I were to find this device on the market I would ask: What is the distance limitation? How long does the battery last in the landmark device?

I have an idea. I use a smart home device like many blind people do these days. It would be nice to have something to hook it up to track items or pets. For instance if I wanted to find my cat I'd ask Alexa and the collar my cat wears give off a audible sound. Or if I want to find my remote for something I ask Alexa wheres remote and again sound is used for me to locate. That would be hugely be appresiated. I'm not sure how youd achieve it.
Another idea which is a bit more grand and a lot more challenging is a helper robot that can help read, scans the area for hazards, smart enough to converse through alexa. And if you can solve hurdles possibly assist outside with basic guide work.
Another idea may be worth considering is a better more intelligent and interactive smart home device. Theres room for major improvements. The right dedication and team could easily surpass google and amazon on smart home technology.

You can use Tile to make things around the house ring when you need to find them. You can buy loads of little tags and stick them on anything you need to find then use the app to locate a specific one.
It would definitely work for the remote and other stuff like that, although I'm not sure how to go about attaching one to a cat.

Personally I really want a robot helper assistant. Like c3po r2d2 or bb8. Where they perform a mix bag of tasks for me. This would be amazing.

This one is hardly within your ability to realize as a student (both in terms of skills and money) but I can't wait for the day where we finally get decent AI on our phones. Like, I have Siri and I can ask her simple questions like "what's the weather like outside" or "what are my appointments" but she isn't able to provide me with any detailed and comprehensive information. For example if I ask her a complex question, she will simply make a web search and list a few pages for me. That's pointless because I don't know how to use voiceover, so I can't access those pages on my phone. It would be cool if Siri would simply provide me concise information about my subject based on those web pages. Heck, it would already be neat if she could read to me an entire wikipedia article, which is currently not possible. Also, it would be cool if the conversations between cell phone user and AI could turn more into actual conversations rather than simple answers followed by simple responses. This may all sound like sci-fi but I once heard that the technology actually already exists for many of these things. The reason Google didn't put them on their phones is because they've been neglecting the AI area for the past few years for the sake of other things (camera improvement etc). This is quite unfortunate. Siri has barely improved during the past 6-7 years. I have an iPhone 5s, my wife has an iPhone X, our Siris are almost the same.
