Has Anyone Heard of Perky Duck Software? (self.Blind)
submitted by oncenightvaler
I am learning Perky Duck Braille Transcription software from Duxbury Braille Translators. I use Braille every day and wanted to give back by becoming a professional for one of the local schoolboards.

I quickly figured out how to do uncontracted Braille and have my screen reader (Voiceover for Mac) read it back to me. However, I cannot do the same with contractions. I am unsure whether that's because I set the language defaults wrong in the program or what the problem is. If anyone has time to fix this that would be appreciated.

I used it on windows a couple of years ago, and it really isn't designed to be used with speech. It is designed to be used with a Braille display.

The screen reader can't make any sense of contracted braille. It just looks like random characters when using speech alone. The best way to read contracted braille is to set up a Braille display, ed turn off grade 2 translation on the screen reader.

right, I half figured that would be the answer, just to clarify I have a Braille Display though usually I am too lazy to use it and have been debating investing in a new one.

I think I'm a little confused on what you are using Perky Duck for. Are you wanting to type into it like a brailler using six key entry to get through a braille transcription class? Are you trying to get Perky Duck to translate for you?
If you are typing in six key entry, you should be able to make any braille symbol you want. Screen readers might interpret this as ASCII. I have a list of what braille contractions are what ASCII symbols if that helps you. Just read what it says on the braille display and ignore the speech in this case.
Perky Duck doesn't really do translation
You need to the DBT software to do that if that's what you are trying to do. Think of Perky Duck as being a very very basic brailler for computers. It's not great, but it is free.
Does this info help at all?

thanks for the further information on the program, yes I am using it as a basic Brailler.

Are you doing six key entry?
oncenightvaler [OP] 1 points 3y ago
yes. I have no trouble using that for the alphabet Braille. also, I found the way to use the six key entry for the Braille Blaster program mentioned in this thread.

I don't think that program will work well for braille transcription. It is made more to help you practice braille. You will probably want a program with more features. I use Braille Blaster to convert my print documents in to braille.

thanks for the hint I will look that one up. However, I will use this one for the course, because they told me that for the course and certification I had to do all the Braille transcription myself so they wanted me to know this program.

In that case, the program you are using will work just fine. I used that exact program to take a course on UEB. Good luck.

That's exactly why Perky Duck was designed, because if you used braille translation software, you would be cheating because it's doing most of the work for you.

I don't have a Mac, but I'll get back to you with an answer for Windows which might be applicable in a day or two.

thanks that would mean a lot.

When I write my Reddit username and press the JAWS Say Line keystroke, I hear, "Dot 6, c, l, o-u sign, d, y, dot 6, b, e, e, p". What do you hear when you try this?
