Audio description on Netflix (self.Blind)
submitted by autistictechgirl1990
Wondering how to turn on AD on Netflix on a smart tv? My parents can’t find it thanks
OrneryPathos 7 points 3y ago
I don’t have a smart tv but I’m guessing their confusion comes from only being able to turn it on while watching a video that has audio descriptions. But when you turn it on from within one video it turns it on for your user on all devices.

Lost In Space has audio descriptions and should be easy to find since a new season just came out.

For an accessible description of how to turn on audio descriptions on most devices $1 Or go to acb.org and Netflix will be in the main menu.

Can they access languages and captions? That’s where mine is 9n the Visio and all other devices.

I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're using VoiceOver on iOS or some desktop screen readers, it is possible to read foreign-language subtitles, however you won't be able to access translations of audio descriptions created for foreign languages.

Iirc, audio description in English is one of the languages. I’ve seen descriptive audio for other languages too, but the English track and the English audio description track seem to be separate. That’s probably why some of the TV shows and movies that show that they have descriptive audio actually don’t, because the provider, say Xfinity, doesn’t put the track up. I always find the problem that when my husband wants to watch one comedy show if it’s a rerun, the descriptive audio is Spanish, not descriptive audio in Spanish, just Spanish. It’s really frustrating. But I may be a misunderstanding What you said.

That's not really what I was getting at. Here's an example: The film Roma on Netflix has two audio options—Spanish [Original] and Spanish [Audio Description]. If a blind person who didn't speak Spanish wanted to watch this movie, they could use VoiceOver to read the English subtitles, however they would have no option of accessing the audio description which was only made available in Spanish, which would make this film still quite inaccessible to them.

What you were talking about is the secondary audio programming. In the US, providers generally only allow for one kind of SAP, which means that the networks need to choose between audio description in English or a Spanish dub.

Second vote for using the American Council for the Blind website to learn more about this. The easiest way I have found to turn on audio descriptions for Netflix shows is to go into a show that you know has them. Any Netflix original programming will have it. Then change the language on Netflix from English to English-Audio Described. This will turn it on for any show that has them on Netflix and leave shows without Audio Description as regular English as long as you are using the same profile you set it up with.
Note that a lot of older shows do not have Audio Description.

I’ve had a lot of problems with this ugh, so what you need to do is start whatever you want to watch then hold the up arrow or upper part of the remote, as if to move up, after several seconds a screen should appear that has has audio and subtitle options, then go to Audio top tap and then down to English (Audio Description). Be warned that very few shows have audio descriptions in other languages and many of the shows don’t have Audio Description, however all new Netflix originals do!

Did you and your parents figure it out? Watch Black Mirror with audio description, it's one of my favourites.

Amazon also has Audio Description for a lot of its shows.
