Public Transport for Visually Impaired?(self.Blind)
submitted by mspawnee1994
Hello! Currently working on a project that revolves around making public transport more easily accessible for people who are visually impaired. Wondering if anyone has any problems they would love to be solved!
We are thinking something in the realm of an alert system that tells you which bus is coming/in front of you so you know whether to get on it or not!
Thanks in advance!

I think we’re half way there. I have an app that plans my route, tells me which busses to take and tells me in real time when my bus will arrive. (It uses gps signals from onboard riders using the app as well). Finally it tells me two stops early when to get off.
What would be very useful would be if the bus itself would transmit a gps signal to the app. That way the real time features would not be dependent upon another rider using the app. This also helps preserve my phone battery life as using gps each time i use transit kills my battery.
Another thing that would be awesome is if it could integrate the walking features from google (ie: walk 300 feet north and your destination will be on your right or you are crossing 7th street).

Kind of off topic but on topic too. When I lived in Japan, every sidewalk around Okinawa as well as Tokyo and Osaka has Braille sidewalks. The sidewalks were patterned with braille so you knew if you were on the sidewalk and when you approached and intersection or curb, the braille would be different. Long oval like raised (about a foot long) patterns for sidewalks and a dot pattern for curbs or intersections. I’ve yet to see that here in the US. They need that here

I feel like this could be helpful, but only if the user can be confident that the app is correct. So for example, if the app just relied on the bus schedule to know which bus was coming, I don't think it would be enough to be confident I was getting on the right bus. I think it would need to somehow integrate with hardware on the bus itself to determine the bus number (or maybe do some kind of OCR with the camera but that seems clunky)

It would be as easy as uploading pin point locations of the busses that are doing their rounds. These could be uploaded to a web page and travelers would just have to click on the link to know where the bus is located.
