I heard from an interview with a blind person that it is rude to swing the cane so widely as usually depicted. Is this true? (self.Blind)

No, you need a wide arc to properly use the cane. It’s usually too narrow to be useful in tv/movies (and also out of step).

No. A wide sweep allows not only to avoid more objects/changes in height of walking surface but it also helps me to walk straighter. Ie if i keep the sweep consistent I know where I am in relation to the edge of the sidewalk.

I do adjust my sweep based on where I am. In a very crowded environment or the aisle of a plane it is necessary as well as polite to tighten it up. The goal isn’t to whack ankles.

Hi, the propper technique has the cane going side to side, having the tip go about 5 inches further than the shouldur on each side. I explain to my students that we are protecting our front, and that what is a foot to our left or right is not in our path.

I tend to follow this method, but I try to incorporate "shorelines" by placing an side of the arc along the edge of a sidewalk, or dragging my knuckles along the wall. This is also helpful since people seem to love stopping in the center of walkways.

A good resource to learn about cane travel is the free online book, The Care and Feeding of the White Cane.

Vision is a spectrum. Until recently I had a small area in the tunnel vision in my right eye that saw clearly (given at around six inches). I use voice over for phone & computer and audio descriptions for TV but I still watch TV nearly every day. The audio descriptions could say for example “a man wearing a blue jacket is using his white cane to walk down the sidewalk. He is swinging it in an exaggerated arc”. Some audio descriptions are surprisingly good.

I'm blind and could see that. I can also read this comment with a magnifier. 90% of blind people have some vision.
