Calling all sports enthusiasts! (self.Blind)
submitted by l-kins
Hey everyone,

I am a researcher by trade in the tech world. My company is currently developing technology to sonify player and ball positional data. The overall goal is to augment the experience of BVI individuals when engaging with live sports. We are starting off with Tennis but hope to develop tech that can be applied to other sports as well.

If you have time, I would love to understand a bit more about your experiences engaging with live sport broadcasts.

How do you usually engage?

What's the best and most important information to you?
What frustrations do you have?

If you were going to develop the best experience of live sport for BVI what would it be like?

Would you use headphones or an external sound system?

Are bone conduction headphones widely used and accessible?

Don't forget to tell me a bit about yourself as well 🙂

Thank you in advance for your time and energy.

I find that sports commentary is very descriptive and I can definitely enjoy sports with just the Tune-in Radio app. It all depends on the commentator but it is generally very good.

I’ve always been curious about sports but I find that I can’t really get into them even on tv because there’s no real way to know what’s going on and we’re currently in an era where broadcasters would rather gossip than describe the game action. The most fun I’ve had with sports was attending live games (baseball, soccer, hockey, and football) with friends willing to tell me what’s going on. I’d definitely go to more events if there was descriptions for them similar to audio described movies. If using a device that belongs to a public venue, I’m fine with headphones but I absolutely don’t want to put something in my ear that’s been in someone else’s.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it ❤. I get annoyed at all the gossiping as well even though I am not vision impaired. So I can imagine how frustrating that must be.

Sure thing! I was so mad trying to watch the World Cup because the English broadcasters were just talking about pointless stuff between long stretches of silence. I gave up and watched it on the Spanish channel even though I don't know the language at all. I could at least get a sense that the game was happening from the excited commentators.
