My husband became suddenly blind after hospitalization and cardiac surgery that went terribly wrong. We had been married for 2 months when this happened. It has been almost 8 years and he is very independent here at home. Not often, but every once in a while, I find myself forgetting that he is blind. Does this happen to any other family members or loved ones of those who are blind? Thank you!

That's honestly a great thing; it means he's confident and you notice that. Congrats on those 8 years, too!
I was essentially born blind and more than once my mother or sister or cousins would point at something to indicate where it is without any other details. It's how I got really good at the silent, blank stare, haha.

My family forgets I’m blind. My daughter will bring her phone to show me a picture and then say, oops I forgot.

Hell, I forget I'm blind. I'll try to rush somewhere, smack into a doorframe or a piece of furniture, and then I remember my cane. I have to remember to take my time and that my visual feedback is not correct.

Was going to post something similar to this.
I'm visually impaired and sometimes when I'm having a particularly good day, I forget. Unfortunately, this usually ends in me becoming overconfident and I get smashed back to earth by something potentially dangerous like trying to cross a road without my symbol cane and having a car slam on the brakes to avoid hitting me or, like you, I'll slam into a bollard or trip down a step.
The ensuing low of shame and embarrassment tends to outweigh the preceding high of confidence.

There are two sides to this. I mentioned recently that years ago at an old job I had colleagues forget, which was absolutely awesome because that's exactly what you want to happen. They simply didn't see me as disabled by it. I see me as pretty disabled by it, but honestly, I don't need professional colleagues to worry about that for me.
On the flipside after a while you get so used to it that you can accidentally leave yourself without a plan B in case a cab fails to turn up, or something. I carry two power banks for charging my phone just on the basis if I am left without it and the cab doesn't show I'm screwed. My total inability to plan for contingencies is part of me forgetting I need to.
In all seriousness yes I do plan for contingencies and I teach people with sight loss to do that but yes, people forget, I forget, and honestly I'll take it as an upside.

Usually only when they're pissed off, and chewing me out for this or that, and telling me how I'm just doing this or that wrong...

After they calm down they usually seem to remember, "oh right, he's blind and doing hell of a lot better than I ever would if I went blind", then begin treating me extra nice for a bit. It's pretty predictable, and I do my best not to take personal offense.

Everyone in my life forgets sometimes, myself included, because you’ve become adjusted and confident so as that it just becomes your life; which I think is a great thing I believe.

Not cited myself, but I can attest to that. My family members on a frequent basis forget I am blind. It’s not a bad thing, in fact (as far as I know, people have their own opinions) it’s a good thing and a complement. It means that you don’t see them differently. You see them as you would any other person.

My friend has been blind since birth...I STILL forget he's blind. Parked my car in his driveway way and watched him bounce off the fender...LOL. Another time we were walking towards each other and bumped...LOL..I TOTALLY forgot he was blind. So...help out when you can. He shows me stuff I would have never known...

A lot of my friends will forget. I've been sent so many memes and then shortly later a followup of "oh that was dumb" 😂

I've only been blind for a little while, 3.5 years but my bf has been blind since he was an infant, his parents will sometimes still forget. It's natural, not being able to see is a hard concept to grasp

My mom does. She will leave things out or move something and not put it back immobilising me completely. Then she has the cheek to complain and gripe how I dont get things done.
I'm very independent. But my independence is only successful if those around me are a little wiser. If something moves or changes I'm redundant in my own home.

Not with my husband, but my friends forget all the time.
