How good are you at recognising voices? (self.Blind)
submitted by Tall-and-blond
I am not blind but friend with some completely blind people and they always recognise me by my voice.

I'm not the greatest, I will forget after some time. I hate it when I can't remember who it is I'm talking to or comes up to me etc. It's embarrassing. If you have a distinctive voice though, I'll probably remember.

Side note, I hate it when people barely talk and it's like ... umm, fuck I need you to say more so I can like remember you, but how do you ask that without sounding weird.

I have to do a lot of guess work at parties and stuff and hope the person says something that will make me remember like, oh yeah remember that time when we got black out drunk and killed your grandpa's liquor supply?

This isn't a thing with people I interact with on the daily though. There are also other ways to identify someone other than their voice.

Yeah, voices are no problem.

I find I'm almost like my dogs. I can usually tell who someone is just by the way they walk, and how heavy they are / their walk is.

I‘m not completely blind. That being said, my friends and family always express that my ability to recognize an actor’s voice is crazy. I once picked up on a woman who I recognized as someone who did a five minute long guest spot on The Walking Dead once.

I've developed the same skill. It's not something I was able to do as well before I lost my vision. I find that I pay a lot of attention to people's voices in everyday conversation, too.

I've never given it much thought, but voices are pretty unique.

As an example, I started a new job in mid November; 46 people in the company, 12 on my team. We're all remote, so we use Zoom and I can't usually see who's talking, because we're usually screen sharing so I just get a small thumbnail of their camera feed.

We have daily team standups and a weekly meeting with everyone. Within a few days, I could recognize my team members by their voices and by the end of the year, I pretty much knew everyone else in the company by theirs.

It actually took me longer to associate the names with the voices than it did the voices with the people, if that makes sense.

I’m pretty good I believe, the more I hear the persons voice the easier it is to recognise, like my best friends or my mums. Although I’m only legally blind with still a fair bit of vision.

I'm terrible. Being both deaf and blind takes its toll that way. I'm sure people get frustrated with me because I'm deaf and blind. It's frustrating for me too.

I'm not blind, but I do have face blindness. If you change one little thing about yourself I really struggle to guess who you are, especially out of context. Context helps me a lot. I know how people, talk, walk, and am generally familiar with what they wear. The thing that helps the most though is knowing I see work people at work. I see people from high school in my home town etc. I guess who you are based off the clues I have available. If you see me some place you don't normally see me, please for the love of God introduce yourself.

I am OK with recognizing voices. However I am horrible with names!

Ok I’m mostly spot on about voices but if I haven’t heard from that person in a while I get confused. Also if Two people sound very similar it throws me off.
