Scared (self.Blind)
submitted by bulbipicg
A few weeks ago, I woke up basically blind in my right eye, I am 19 years old and have always had 20/20 vision. Got an mri, multiple blood tests and eye tests. One of my optic nerves is extremely swollen while the other one is slightly damaged, I’m being sent to a specialist and it may be genetic. I don’t know what to do and I am terrified

Just relax and wait to see what the doctors say. You’ve already done everything you can do right now. And it sounds like your other is fine, so that’s good.

Thank you for helping me calm down

Sure thing! I'm glad to hear it helped. :) I may be mostly blind myself, but I know how scary it is to lose something you're used to, especially suddenly like you did. I've had something similar happen to me and it was scary but I've had the advantage of decades of skills training; you didn't have any of that. I hope you got good news from your doctors!

They will most likely ordinate corticosteroids to you to reduce the swelling. This might reduce the swelling drastically and give you back your full vision. Wish you all the best.

Try not to panic, it's good that there is a specialist that you have been referred to - means that there's likely options out there and not a 'sorry there's nothing we can do". Wishing you the best of luck.

It is normal to be scared. All of us here are cheering for you and hoping you have a quick recovery.

This must be incredibly stressful for you. I have the contact info of a mental health therapist who is familiar with disabilities if you think it would help you.

Went blind when I was a teenager too, feel free to reach out if it would be helpful. Everything you're feeling right now is valid and rational.

Hey, you’ve done the best thing you could have. now just breathe, focus on the positives and wait to hear what the doctors say, then go from there.

Dont be scared. Same here. Was like you do was my gf. But actually now I'm near total and shes total we realise being blind has turned into a blessing. We are both very grateful for our journey. And both feel if we were cured we wouldnt accept it. You'll understand in time if your sight wanes hour perspective and outlook grows. You'll see the important things without sight than you ever did with it.

Out of curiosity did they give any names to the swelling or damage of your optic nerves? Did they discuss a lumbar puncture at all?
bulbipicg [OP] 1 points 3y ago
No names but I do have sleep apnea and they think there could be some pressure in my head and maybe I would do a spinal tap
AllHarlowsEve 1 points 3y ago
I have the condition that they think you might have, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. The fact that you're getting treatment early is a good sign, and could possibly result in a reversal of your vision loss

I sure hope so, thank you so much!
